I agree with embee, although the 2 and 3 captaincy positions (Waugh and Border) are not clear-cut; I prefer Border in many ways. Also think the captaincy of Ponting is not as bad as is generally portrayed (equally, a lot of that captaincy may have been Gilly's rather than Ricky's). I wonder how good Gilly could have been as captain?

Well, butter me on both sides and colour me stonkered - finally, the blinkered are showing themselves capable of a reasonable assessment of Waugh's captaincy. I never thought I'd see the day . . .
(ps: I'm serious. There is no sarcasm there.)

I know he was never a permanent captain, but Gilchrist probably warrants a place in this discussion.
He did captain Australia in five tests - including Australia's most important series win in the last ten years.
It's probably not a big enough sample but all I can say is I'm glad Ponting was injured for that 2004 series in India.
Sticking to the topic:
Batting:
Chappell
Border
Ponting
Waugh
Taylor
Captaincy:
Taylor
Waugh
Border
Chappell
Ponting
When Waugh made mistakes it was because he was being too aggressive - I don't mind that. I prefer it to someone making mistakes because they are being too defensive (cough, Border, cough).
Putting aside tactics or strategy, Waugh was simply a better leader than Border. AB could lead from the front with his bat, but he was extremely reluctant as a leader of men.
Taylor had the mix right. He was an attacking captain, but not reckless. He commanded plenty of respect and was able to distance himself without getting arrogant, aloof or cranky.
Cheers.

Interesting how a lot of them are grumpy. From Border to Ponting it's been:
Grumpy, Cheerful, Grumpy, Grumpy.
Grumpy, Cheerful, Grumpy, Grumpy.

Dunno if it was quite ALL show - sense of humor never came across as an obvious feature in his character, especially his writing in those turgid tour diaries.

Being boring and being grumpy are different but, Nerky . . . you should know that.
