http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2008/06/02/scprin102.xml"We are very aware of what's happening in India, and we'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Geoff Miller, the national selector, said yesterday. "All I ask from the players is that if we show loyalty to them selection-wise, they show us some loyalty, and that if something crops up, to let us know where they stand so we can deal with it."
Is that a particularly bad thing though? I'm sure most of the England players would always put playing for England over the IPL. Except maybe Kaypee.

Surely, they could drop Jimmy. WTF would have him in the IPL? How much would he be worth? - £2.38 with a book of green shield stamps thrown in proably.

If selection policy is dictated by a fear that certain players will disappear to the IPL if they're not picked, rather than choosing players on merit, form and such, then of course it's a bad thing.
Re: England v NZ, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 5th-9th June
That kind of attitude has to be a major factor in his ongoing lack of progress. He should be taking about cutting out the boundary balls, the 6-an-over (or worse) spells, etc. Not claiming he's bowling well because he's boosted his series average by knocking over a few tailenders.JKLever wrote:Jimmy pleased with bowling.

Broad has the right attitude, he accepts he still has a long way to go and publicly admits it. And I wouldn't bet against him making the sort of progress to make him a reliable top-class Test bowler in the next couple of years, while Jimmy continues the cycle of one good performance then 4 or 5 crap ones.

Dello's piece of news is some of the most disastrous I've ever heard and JKL's news is some of the most unbelievable.

Interesting article in this week's Sunday Times about the dearth of genuine fast bowlers in English cricket, and a rather curious quote from Ottis Gibson, suggesting England have given up on pace bowling: "Peter Moores [Fletcher’s successor as England coach] stresses to me that it doesn’t matter if you bowl 90mph-plus. What we are looking for is people who consistently put the ball in the right place and swing it. Test cricket is about creating pressure."
Then how the f*ck does James Anderson get a game?

Re: England v NZ, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 5th-9th June
And how many of them would really be a great loss to England anyway? They may well be close to the best 11 we've got (well, best 10 plus Anderson) but most of them are fairly mediocre by world standards, certainly in the shorter formats.PearlJ wrote:Dello wrote:Rather depressing article by Del Pringle today hinting that England's selectors are loath to drop any of the current players in case they bugger off to the IPL.

Anyway, the IPL isn't long enough to stop someone playing for England unless the selectors wanted to put their foot down. They wouldn't make an example of a KP or Fredalo anyway, that's cutting off your nose to spite your face. It would be the dispensable fringe player if they wanted a scapegoat. They could have made a statement by leaving out Mascarenhas from the JAMODI squad but chose not to do so.

Yes, but do you think any of the current England players would turn their back on England as the ECB fear?

I can't see it: there should be the opportunity for England players to get involved in the IPL next April, and then there is that bit of a bun-fight with Stanford's West Indies all-stars (Brian Lara comeback anyone?) - oh yes, and getting the Ashes back off your boys next year - will figure fairly high on their list of priorities!

Seriously, how many of them would get a really big IPL contract? Two, probably, Pietersen and Flintoff.
How many others would get a worthwhile offer at all? Not that many I'd imagine. Collingwood would probably get a decent contract, ignoring current form. Can't see much interest in Bell, Cook or perhaps Strauss in Twenty20. Vaughan can hardly have played a white-ball game in over a year. And I can't see them fighting it out to sign any of the current bowlers, either.

I can't see anyone missing test cricket for IPL. The real problem will surely be for the counties losing those players services.
On the other hand, they rarely see them as it is anyway.

Re: England v NZ, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 5th-9th June
Considering that the IPL owners will no doubt be hunting T20 specialists next year in light of Shane Watson's unexpected success, the likes of Mascharenhas, Wright, Maddy, and Swann could probably command a hefty sum.

Is it 'big' though? I expect 'big' means 1 million plus.
Re: England v NZ, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 5th-9th June
Don't think KP or Freddie (maybe KP) would have gotten 1mil+ with the salary cap on. Shah, Bopara, etc., would have gone for about the amount Marsh, etc., were paid.

Ironically, KP isn't a great T20 player
Never seen him succeed when he has to whack it from ball one.

Apparently there was a mill in the pipeline for both of them. Could be a talk up.
Re: England v NZ, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 5th-9th June
Stuart Broad will probably be picked up by someone as well.
I'm not sure Pietersen's played enough Twenty20 to get the hang of it really, much like the rest of our players.

No idea mate - let's just say big enough to tempt - doubt it's the 1 mill though.Brass Monkey wrote:Merlin wrote:

Irony of the IPL however was that the cheapest buy was deemed overall as the most successful!
Shane "now I'm injured, now I'm not" Watson.
