78th player to captain England since James Lillywhite in March 1877, already the 28th ODI captain and will become the 4th T20 captain.

So what's it mean to his contract, going from the no. 1 batsman to no. 1 batsman + captain of the Test side, ODI side and T20 side?

Probably not a lot to him. He's already minted. I expect his salary will double.

What happens when he says he doesn't fancy a Test series against Sri Lanka minus their IPL players and would rather play in the IPL instead?

Of the 78 England captains (assuming KP's fit for The Oval) KP is the 18th to be born outside England and his appointment takes South Africa above India as the most popular venue for expatriate England captains to be born in. List is (errors are all mine):

South Africa - 4 - Greig, Lamb, Strauss, Pietersen
India - 3 - Jardine, Cowdrey (MC), Hussain
Trinidad - 2 - Harris, Warner
Ireland - 2 - O'Brien, Fane
Wales - 2 - Walters, Lewis
Australia - 1 - Allen
Peru - 1- Brown
Germany - 1 - Carr
Italy - 1 - Dexter
Scotland - 1- Denness.

Haven't read the thread. Has anyone said that this is a shit decision? KP's too self obsessed to be England captain and star batsman. His self-obsession makes him a great batsman but probably not a great captain. If he loses some of his seld-obsession and becomes a good captain, his batting will suffer. He won't be able to do both.

KP should've been ODI captain and Strauss, Cook or Bell should have become Test captain.

Both Greigs qualified for England through having a Scottish (!) father and so, presumably, held dual nationality from birth. Tony came to England in 1965 at the age of 18 and first played for Sussex in 1966, aged 19. He first played for England in the Rest of the World series in 1970 although official Test recognition of the matches was later withdrawn.

Allan Lamb first played for Northants in 1978, shortly before his 24th birthday, after several seasons playing for Western Province in the Currie Cup and first played for England in 1982, captaining them in 1990. He too had English parents but Bill Frindall speaks of him "qualifying by residence".

Not sure, if he did he qualified within 5 years. Hick had to qualify in 7, I think.

Don't think Hick ever played an official match for Zimbabwe.

He was taken to a World Cup by Zimbabwe but never played.

Seems as though the qualification rules for England were out of step with other countries.

At the time, Zimbabwe seemed a long way from Test status, and so he set himself instead to fulfill the residency requirements for England qualification, and despite an offer of a four-year qualification period from New Zealand he opted to take the longer path of a seven-year wait to play for his newly adopted home. I still find it very hard to warm to this man.



There's something about him that constantly and consistently screams I'm an arrogant c@nt who rates myself more than you can possibly believe.

Quite ironic really, because he comes across as a thick, utterly incoherent c@nt on interview.

Stringing a meaningful sentence together with a microphone pushed in his mush is not one of his great strengths, and I just hope he's more able to convey his thoughts to his charges in the dressing room over the coming weeks, months and perhaps years of his tenure as skipper.
