Perfect captaincy material then.....
Not really.
You get the impression that the arrogance KP displays is one that gives not a flying fook about anyone but himself.

I'm disappointed and quite glad that Key didn't get the captaincy. On one hand, it would have been great to see him play for and captain England. On the other hand, he can carry on playing for Kent.

South Africa - 4 - Greig, Lamb, Strauss, Pietersen
India - 3 - Jardine, Cowdrey (MC), Hussain
Trinidad - 2 - Harris, Warner
Ireland - 2 - O'Brien, Fane
Wales - 2 - Walters, Lewis
Australia - 1 - Allen
Peru - 1- Brown
Germany - 1 - Carr
Italy - 1 - Dexter
Scotland - 1- Denness.
Maybe we should have got another Peruvian in...
Nobby Solano isn't doing much these days.
Re: Pietersen to be named as England captain
You have to feel sorry for Vaughan now. We all banged on about his lack of runs and the strange selections, and the unusually uninspiring captaincy, but when you then see the man tearful as he announces he's standing down, you kind of feel bad for criticising him. I guess it reminds us all that he cares about the England team, and that he genuinely thought he was doing the best thing for them.
Best English captain since Brearley imo, despite the sad and sorry end to his tenure. It's his batting more than anything else that led him to this decision, imo. He just couldn't justify his position in the side when he was losing AND not scoring runs himself.

To elaborate - I'm not sure that "mercurial" batsmen generally make good captains. They often struggle to see things from the perspective of "lesser" batsmen and certainly not from a bowler's perspective.
Greg Chappell was the great example of this for Aust - imperious batsman, ordinary captain and leader. At least he had the good fortune of having Lillee in his side.

History suggests that most England captains of the last 20 years have struggled to maintain their batting standards once given the captaincy. I guess the exception was Gooch. Time will tell with KP. I just hope he doesn't become a 'performs once a series' Joe average who averages 41.

Is Pietersen the first English captain to land the job after deciding it was too much hard work to get selected for the country of his birth?

He's probably the first England captain to specifically go to another country, actually change his whole cricketing game and qualify as a devastating middle-order batsman rather than a pie-tossing number 8. So, sort of worked harder to get into another country rather than hang around in his original.
He's also the first England captain to:
* - Choose be-bop as his favourite music.
* - Eat salmon with peanut butter.
* - Sing to cherubs.
* - Play the spoons at a grade 10 level.
* - Eat ice from the North Pole.
* - Snort sherbert.
* - Go skiing in Jamaica.

Exactly. And only the second one to have time travelled. The other one obviously being Sir Gubby Allen.

Strauss as captain in the series v Pakistan 2006 had an average of 60-odd. Overlooked for the Ashes captaincy, his form plummeted. Perhaps he had just been "found out" by the Aussies - entirely possible however that his confidence and peace of mind were also hit before he got to Oz. (Reports suggest he was distraught and had some sort of a crisis at being passed over after a successful series v Pak)
l@@k
Incidentally, this is why I think he would have been a better bet than rush-of-the-swashbuckle Kev for the present captaincy, but then ....

I didn't realise he was so uniquely qualified to be an international cricket captain.

My response to his 'wibble dibble' question, though less dignified, was a f*ckload better than that dross.

Think you're getting a bit carried away, BM.
