Re: The Olympics Thread
Great swim by Leisl Jones tonight. No doubt she will choke as usual in the final.
And how carp are our male swimmers.

Congrats to Steph Rice on a superb swim, English lass Nicole Cooke in the very wet ladies road race, and to Libby Trickett for getting Aus home for 3rd in the Women's 4 x 100 relay.
Gutsy effort by Aus v Argies.
She's a Welshie, Skully.

Re: The Olympics Thread
The US B Team have just broken the world record for the 4 x 100 m Freestyle Relay. Noticed one of their swimmers was black - which is very rare in international swimming. Like seeing a white man in the 100m final.
Re: The Olympics Thread
Not sure the swimmers should be allowed to wear those leotards that make them go faster.
Re: The Olympics Thread
Excellent comeback in the Chick's Hockey. Aus came back from 4-1 down to win 5-4.

It looked like the Brits had a black girl in the 400m freestyle as well.

Re the 4x100m relay - I think that could be the weak link in Phelps' quest for 8 gold.

Maybe they should let him do all 4 legs...

At one stage in the 90s, I think Keiren Perkins' 800m free world record time would have won gold in the womens 4 x 200m freestyle in Barcelona.

The women's gymnastics is strange - I've never seen so many girls fall of the balancing beam.

Aye.
Although we're not expecting a medal in that event - GB swimmers just beat the national record by 5 seconds!

Yeah. They were actually leading into the last leg of that heat.
The times were all a little bit stupid. 5 teams beat the former WR and at least 2 of those were out and out B teams. Obviously the Seppos have Phelps and others to come in but Aust also have Sullivan (second fastest ever over 100m) and Callus to come in.

Updated medal table, with no more Golds to be won today...

Can't see China winning too many medals at the track. And Phelps still has 7 gold to win on his own.

Re: The Olympics Thread
Hmm looking at the number of sports and the medals to be won in each sport, it could be tight.
The following are the sports to be contested at these Games. The number of events to be contested in each sport is indicated in parentheses.

Swimming (34)
Synchronized swimming (2)
Water polo (2)
Archery (4)
Athletics (47)
Badminton (5)
Baseball (1)
Basketball (2)
Boxing (11)
Canoeing (16)
Cycling (18 )
Equestrian (6)
Fencing (10)
Field hockey (2)
Football (2)
Gymnastics (18 )
Handball (2)
Judo (14)
Modern pentathlon (2)
Rowing (14)
Sailing (11)
Shooting (15)
Softball (1)
Table tennis (4)
Taekwondo (8 )
Tennis (4)
Triathlon (2)
Volleyball (4)
Weightlifting (15)
Wrestling (18 )
How many medals would you expect China to win in each event?

Re: The Olympics Thread
Swimming has too many medals (34) when compared to Athletics (47) in my opinion. Athletics is really what the Olympics is all about.
Maybe we need a few more Athletics events - three legged race, wheelbarrow race, egg & spoon race - to even the balance up a bit. Although will all the doping controversies I can see future disputes about GM eggs being used...

Re: The Olympics Thread
Damn it, Australia's best girl gymnast has copped an ankle injury which has put her out of the games. She (and the team) were a decent chance at their first ever medal.
