Really?

The last 2 games have been our most succesful since 1924!

Huzzah!
A few million quid spent on them, specialist training facilities, all sponsored pros ...
and a couple of dozen medals over some 200 events!

I guess if that's "most successful" then good luck in 2012 after another
100 million squids are squandered ...

And it really is time the media stopped over-hyping Brits chances ...
Murray knocked out by a 77 world ranked Taiwanese in the tennis.
The synchro divers (now at each others throats) finish last !!

I'll get me coat ........

Don't think Merls knows quite how hard it is to win Olympic medals these days when its more of a world event than ever. As for over hyping our chances - Murray and the divers were slim medal chances. Only twats thought they could win their event.

Our main gold hopefuls haven't even performed yet. We could well end up with 35+ medals and a third of those gold.

Blah, blah funding..... you think every other country doesn't fund their teams? Or are you just talking gibberish & negative britspeak for the sake of it. Australia have been funding their olympians since the early 80's. Funding in this country only started in 1997 for the Sydney Olympics and the results improvement is there to see...

Atlanta 1996 1x G 8xS 6xB - 15 medals
Sydney 2000 11 xG 10xS 7xB - 28 medals
Athens 2004 9 x G 9 xS 12xB - 30 medals

Cheeky bugger, 'tis a good old fashioned Yorkshire name. I don't know where the name originates from but there's a small town/village called Spofforth that lies between Harrogate and Wetherby.

shrug The Olympics are only good for the random sports you never ever watch and then after 20 minutes of them on the TV in the Olympics ypu become a World Class judge and all round know it all!

Its brilliant to that extent. The Judo was great, although I couldn't help but chuckle evertime the commentator said the word Nippon, and I have no idea why!

Whatever turns you on Lever ... if it's the Olympics, more power to your elbow...
it just doesn't do it for me mate!

No, I haven't the earthliest how hard it is to win medals -
But what I do know is that at least 36 gold medals won over the past 4 Olympiads
have been tainted by known drug users ... Gawd knows how many got away!!

And these are people whom the world laud as "Olympian Greats" showing the "true spirit of the games"-
until years later, they're rumbled as nothing but cheats!
Hence my tongue in cheek question earlier ... how many "champions" will, next year,
be exposed as drug cheats when the new drugs that camouflage the drugs that
previously camouflaged the camouflaged drugs come to light ?!

Hey ... I'm just being cynical mate.
You carry on enjoying! Wink

JKL - less of the 'old' mate ... but cynical - yes ... very ! Wink

PS Why was Murray not expected to grab a medal of any hue?

What evidence have you got that drug-taking is endemic? There is a few high profile cases but nothing to say that it is the done thing amongst athletes.

But you seem to be unrepentant cynic. There is just no hope for some people.....

Just can't be arsed Pearlie ... but when high profile court cases (Joyner et al) hit the
headlines exposing the extreme measures some atheletes take (via drugs) to mask the
effects of yet more performance enhancing drugs ... cynicism creeps in rather rapidly.

Warne's diuretics pale to insignificance when matched to this lot!

Ben Johnson, Lynford Christie, Joyner, her shot-put hubby and scores of others -
(a Greek was nobbled on day 1 Beijing before the bloody games started!!)
- cynicism creeps in rather rapidly and you begin to wonder who's next and which
super-drug was invented to mask the other steroids these atheletes take.
High profile cases may only just be the tip of the iceberg.

Never mind - there was a time I ardently followed the Olympics, but not now -
And yes, you are correct, I am an unrepentant cynic who is lost to the Olympian "dream"!
