Obviously winning Women's Grand Slams turns you into an obnoxious goose

Cracking toon from the Melbourne Herald Sun, and oh dear, the PC brigade are not happy. Frankly, I think it's spot-on.

The same cartoonist - Mark Knight - posted this recent toon as proof that he wasn't being genderist/racist/yankist...

Bizarre. Showing a black female as a black female is somehow both racist and sexist.

Fair enough but did they really need to turn Naomi into Wilma Flintstone?
The PC mob scream. the bogans gloat and smirk. Neither is on the same planet as interesting but fortunately all you need do to stay upwind of it is, not wallow in the S Bend.

Naomi's hair had blonde extensions in it. He portrayed her accurately on the day.

Stan the Man beats Joker (or at least was beating Joker 2 sets to 1 before Joker pulled a heartstring).

Is it just me or are some of the greats of the modern game poor losers.
This is not the first time the Joker has "retired hurt" when losing (he was 2 sets to love down here). And who can forget old Roger bawling like a baby after losing the 2009 AO final to Rafa?
And Serena is a shocker. Remember her threat to kill the lineswoman while she was getting beaten by Stosur In the USO? And of course, the USO moment immortalised above in toons.
Really, folks??

Only Rafa left of the big guns (and of past Slam winners full stop) in the men’s event. Does he coast to the title or is this the moment for a new champion to emerge?

Rafa’s home. Men’s tennis is pathetic outside of the Big 3.

Is it still the Big 3, or is Fed on the wane? He is 38 after all.

Well, he’s a lot more beatable than he was, but there’s still nobody else close to the three of them on a consistent basis.skully wrote:Is it still the Big 3, or is Fed on the wane? He is 38 after all.
We’re going to get to the stage soon where other players will start winning majors “by default” when they all break down at the same time. Could yet happen in this one.

A glimpse of the future here? Teenagers stealing the show, at least until Djokovic walks the final on the men’s side. Maybe we’re just skipping a generation for the next batch of stars.

I had the same though the other say. FAA and his cohort don’t have the scars that Zverev et al have.

Re: US open tennis
FAA is positively a veteran compared to Alcaraz…
Djokovic is nine years older than anyone else in the last eight of the men’s singles. As we saw at Wimbledon, the younger players have the edge over him in terms of athleticism now, but not yet in terms of stamina and mental strength, which should come with time - if they don’t pick up too many battle scars in the meantime. They can often beat him over 3 sets but it’s a different matter to do so over 5. And if Federer and Nadal, plus Murray, Wawrinka etc. are effectively spent forces now, it’s a slightly different scenario to having three massive shadows and a few smaller ones hanging over you as you try to progress your career.

We may just be waiting for the symbolic changing of the guard moment, as per when Federer beat Sampras 20 years ago.

Remarkable stuff from Emma Raducanu, anyway. 10 straight-sets wins to take the title! First of many, hopefully… though a bit different now the expectation is there, as the likes of Osaka have found out.

Re: US open tennis
Seems like the first time the crowd were really behind Djokovic in a final, as well! Usually they’re rooting for Federer, Nadal or an underdog…
Could be that symbolic moment we’ve been waiting for. Not saying Djokovic won’t be back, he’s surely still odds-on to win in Melbourne… though would be fitting if the three of them remained level on 20 major titles forever.
