Not good enough to be in the side one week, captain the next
Yep. Ashwell Prince, who hasn't been in the SAf side for the past five Tests, has been selected for the next Test, and comes back into the side as captain, and as an opener. Must say I find this a bit odd, despite the reasoning Procter gives.

Does this mean Kenzie has been dropped?

from the linked article:DJ_Smerk wrote:Does this mean Kenzie has been dropped?
I'll assume you're at the office and they block cricinfo.Neil McKenzie's Test career is at the crossroads after he was dropped along with Morne Morkel for the third Test in Cape Town. Ashwell Prince will return to the side as captain to replace the injured Graeme Smith and Prince will also take Smith's role as opener, alongside the Dolphins batsman Imraan Khan, who is in line for his Test debut.
Albie Morkel has a chance to make his first Test appearance having been retained in the squad, while the uncapped fast bowler Wayne Parnell has also been included.

Aye, quite remarkable (re: thread topic).
I wonder when this last happened? Didn't Brearley into the side as captain when Beefy was dropped form the skipperhood during the 81 Ashes series.

So despite the secession from the Commonwealth in the 60s, and the strong Dutch influence those Afrikaaners still know how to be like the English...

I reckon Prince is being sold a dog on this one . . . thrown straight in to open . . .

Tough gig.
Not sure who else might have been captain. Boucher, I suppose.

Obviously Kallis IS as thick as he looks . . . never see his name pop up as possible captain . . .

Kallis did have a match as captain, 11 years ago.
BTW, d'y'all know there have only been three RSA captains who have skippered 20 tests or more? GCS is by far their most experience captain evah.

Then again, Brearley was never good enough to be in the side, _except_ as captain.
Not that AP is of Brearley's type.

Could be that the next test captain of Pakistan is someone we've never heard of...

Kallis was the VC a couple of years back and captained SA in a test then IIRC. He chucked the VC in a pique after being dropped from the T20 side. Boucher was VC for a bit before that but has never really wanted the top job.
Didn't Close come into captain against the WI, circa 1968.

Tough on Prince. If Imran Khan outscores him by 1 run during this test, Prince will be dropped.

I agree, Naeem. Prince is the Saffie version of Simon Katich. Extremely poorly treated.

Lee Germon captained New Zealand in his test debut.

Indeed he did Wally. And he didn't exactly disgrace himself either.

Didn't Cowdrey and Simpson come back to captain long after their sell by dates?
