Should Stu Broad be pulled up? Empty Should Stu Broad be pulled up?

Post by PeterCS Fri 12 Jun 2009, 15:28

BBC Article

I haven't seen it, but it looks wrong if it is as it says in the article. As they pointed out on the radio, gesticulation sounds like he's ordereing a shifty shift of the field. And less acceptable still is what Colly says in defence of the strategem, if that's what it is (bolded).

Smith unhappy with Broad tactics

South Africa captain Graeme Smith wants the International Cricket Council to clarify whether the tactics of England bowler Stuart Broad are acceptable.

On several occasions Broad has looked away and pointed halfway through his run-up in a bid to distract batsman.

Smith said: "We saw it happen from the dugout. The match referees need to discuss that, it needs clarifying.

"I don't know what the rules stipulate, whether it's in the spirit of the game is a tough one."

Smith made his comments after South Africa defeated England in their first match of the World Twenty20 Super Eights on Thursday.

England captain Paul Collingwood has said Broad's actions were OK with him and just another way to gain an advantage in a batsman-dominated game.

Collingwood said: "I think the game is moving on. People are coming up with different techniques with the bat, fielding techniques and you are seeing things that audiences have not seen before.

"It's the way the game is moving and as long as it's in the spirit (of the game) it's fine and I think it is.

"New techniques and theories are going to be produced and things like this are going to happen and people are going to find different ways of putting a batsman off."

He has been doing that all summer tbh. I really don't like Broad, he shows every sign of being a spoiled brat with his reaction to umpiring decisions that go against him etc.

Very good bowler though unfortunately...

I noticed this during the WI warm-up and thought WTF!

In answer, yes he should pack it in. Not cricket old chap.

Although Darren Gough got away with pulling a stupid face as he was running in....

Silly boy. Easily nipped in the bud without the intervention of the authorities however. The batsman should just pull away from his batting stance.

For getting under Smith's skin, Broad should get an OBE. But the tactic is on the wrong side of the dividing line as far as the spirit of the game is concerned - and someone should have a word in his shell-like.

It's quite funny that as the son of a match referee he treads such a thin line not only in this action but also failing to look at the umpire whilst appealing Brett Lee style on occasion.

How about the way Majid Haq bowls then? I wouldn't be too pleased with that if I was a batsman, batswoman or batter.

He should be allowed to do anything he can to avoid looking clueless.

Yuvraj Singh will certainly dine out on him for the rest of his life.

The ICC have told him not to do it.

How dare a bowler try and put off a batsman who is moving all over the crease, feinting to play a switch hit or pretending to charge down the pitch?
