Re: The Football Thread - 09/10
Yep, I am ... loathe the buggers ... tried it once early doors for a few overs and found it more distracting and annoying that it was worth. But you're right about your last observation ... my opening partner of several seasons ( of same vintage ) didn't like a darting first over from a fairly rapid quick on said greentop, so called for a helmet. it fit him (or so he said) snugly, and content, he resumed his guard and waited for the next ball. It came, wide down the leg side so he scythed at it ... missed, spun around, and lost the helmet which tumbled, slo-mo fashion, and landed plumb on the wicket, disturbing the bails!Shoeshine wrote:I am actually travelling round the country (this country) with Tourism Queensland. Nice !
I think I'm (and you too I suspect) of the last generation that grew up not wearing them. ..... And once you've gone out without a helmet, you're buggered if you're going to call for one....
PMSL'ing, he strode off, the air blue and rancid !
Needless to say, he never wore one since, preferring instead to take the blows a la DBClose ... !!!

I've been once, was alright. Have met people as you have described though and agree with your assessment!Shoeshine wrote:At least it's not like skiing though. I mean, nothing against skiing in the slightest, but if someone says they don't like football people accept it. If they say they don't like cricket, they accept it. But if you say you don't like skiing, you get the "Oh you MUST go skiing, you'll simply love it, you really don't know what you're missing, you'll have a great time you really will, I simply CANNOT believe you don't like skiing, clearly you've never been before, because you'd have such fun, did I tell you about Davos this year, it was marvellous, you really must come along one year, you'd have so much fun, it's simply the best thing......."
F*CK. OFF. I DO NOT want to go f*cking skiing, now f*ck off and die you infuriatingly pompous wanker.
Etc.

Given how little cricket is sometimes discussed in the rest of it, that's more than amazing.JKLever wrote:Amazing forum this, where else would cricket chat break out on a football thread....

Pah - skiings great fun, especially with a bunch of mates.
But I wouldn't go outta my way to convince a non-believer to try it though ... more room for me on the piste without the need to dodge L platers !

So let me get this right Merls, you're into both skiing and horse racing?
Have you developed a chin yet?

Square jawed and chinless mate ... fallen over far too many times doing both - (not racing, cross country riding) and generally with face in the mud/hard ground/ice, so plenty of nicks around the chin and boatrace to worry about 'developing a chin' !

Merls, I doff my cap at your aristocratic mien! You twat
The best part of skiing was the apres, in my experience - a load of farking about otherwise. I much prefer my mountain bike for going fast down a hill.
I too could never get to grips with a helmet as they weren't used when I started to play.
Admittedly, I never faced anything much over 80mph, but I never feared getting skulled as I always watched the ball. Top edging it into your mouth was a different matter, but I still preferred to take my chances..

Oh what's happening now.
Rafa appears to be going for a referral. This really is desperate times for the Liverpool manager.
