Re: Rugby Tri Series
Rice's fellow Queenslander Matthew Mitcham sounds like an intelligent guy... although he does live in Sydney these days.

I once ran into John Eales and another Queensland player in the lifts at the Coogee Holiday Inn (now the Crowne Plaza).
It was at that moment I truly realised how tall John Eales was. I looked up at him and said something like "Go easy on us tonight". Meanwhile, a woman who was also in the lift said, "You guys are so tall. Are you basketballers?"
John Eales, class act that he is, took it in his stride and said "No ma'am, we're not basketballers but can imagine how you thought that. We play Rugby".

Re: Rugby Tri Series
I've met Ealsey and his lovely wife a few times through our kids' school.
Absolutely top bloke and seriously one of the best sportsmen the country has ever produced. Apparently he was a gun golfer within a year of taking it up, he was a pretty good goal kicker as well.
If he had played AFL, I reckon he would have been one of the ATG ruckmen.

Re: Rugby Tri Series
It amazes me how many people accused of racism, being a homophobe etcetera manage to use the 'I have so many friends who are black, gay" as a defence.
Had Rice uttered it verbally in the heat of the moment, you could almost excuse her on the grounds of euphoric brainfade. The fact though that she chose togo to the effort to locate her twitter account and broadcast it to the world is more indicative of her true colours.

I don't think she had to go locate her twitter account. There are plenty of addicts out there who are wedded to the technology and feel naked if they don't tweet something inane on a regular basis (the iPhone has only made things worse).
I think Rice's biggest failing was to not engage her brain before putting finger to keyboard/touchpad. Not that what she tweeted was OK - it wasn't. But she's paid the price and apologised. I'm happy to assume she was just being oafish and insensitive (and a poor sport). I'll need a lot more proof before I lump her in with the homophobes.
I like Matthew Mitcham's take on the matter a whole lot more than Ian Roberts'. You can criticise someone's actions without having to make assumptions about their true colours. But then I'm always giving people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I'm just a sucker.

Re: Rugby Tri Series
The words 'foggot' and 'gay' are used as insults by many people, to mean much the same as, say, '*sh!t*'. As in an inept, foolish, or contemptible person.
While not saying what Rice did was acceptable, had she called the Jaaps '*sh!t*', would there be as much fuss?
Moral of the story is, temper your words - in any situation - to the audience.

That would still be offensive to sh!theads - for all their faults they don't deserve to be compared to South African rugby players.

She may have been constrained by twitter's 140-character limit per 'tweet'. Of course, had she said 'jaapies' that still would have fitted in.
