Re: Kerry Packers War...
Redpath hit two sixes within a couple of overs of each other first morning day 1 of his second last Test in Adelaide, on the way to within 20 of a century before lunch and then dismissal for 103 well under an hour into the middle session. In the second innings he made a further 65 while partnering Alan Turner to his only Test ton.
The Melbourne LPFSP raised a massive stink when he was overlooked for the Man of the Match award, in favor of Windian all-rounder Keith Boyce. Tour book author Frank Tyson, a MOM judge in Adelaide, was so unimpressed by the reaction that he asked CA never to be invited to judge the MOM again.
In Melbourne a week later Redpath handed in a similar card - first innings ton, second innings 50 - and this time he did pick up the gong, his last official act before announcing his immediate retirement, which neither the ACB nor the VCA had any idea was coming.

Thanks Fred.
The cricinfo profile should therefore say 65th Test where it says 66th.
Redders was also our last amateur ...

It's not entirely surprising if Pathers blossomed late, with more attacking strokeplay.
Didn't he start out in the 60s under Storknose Bill (also as his opening partner)? That decade is not generally noted in England or Oz for batting belligerence - that was mainly left to the "flamboyant" WIndies.
No wonder they invented ODIs in 1970-71 ...!

It's funny, I know the author quite well. A milder-mannered, decent, highly logical, well reasoned and charming man you could not wish to meet. But mention Bruce Francis and he becomes Jake LaMotta.lardbucket wrote:...missed the 1972 tour when that oxygen thief Bruce Francis was chosen...

Close, lardster. Redders was caught on the boundary (no small feat) off Gibbs after posting his ton, giving Gibbs the wicket that passed Freddy. I clearly remember a weary Redders stopping as he was walking off, returning and shaking Gibbs' hand on his achievement.lardbucket wrote:Sadly ... some of the above is not remembered accurately!
THIS MATCH was the last played at Test level by both Gibbs and Redpath.
No sixes credited to Redpath though.

Who the hell is Pathers??
Also it's kind of ironic that the only century scored in Oz List A limited over cricket for about the first five years it was played, was in the 1971-72 Whateverthehell Cup final by none other than William Morris 'Storknose' Lawry.

No - that was later. I remember I knew about the GC Cup in England well before it was called that in Oz, and I'd only just heard of the English GC by 71. .
Coke had it for a while, or was it their main competition at the time - RC (Royal Crown) Cola?

Bit confusing that the name was used in so many different countries over different years, up to 1980.

Now it's only the best NZ boys can get, it seems.

That uncharacteristic innings seems to have been Bill's last hurrah.
Must have imagined Ian Chappell's head as the ball.

Re: Kerry Packers War...
It was the 'Coca Cola Cup' in 1971-72 when Lawry made his century, acc to CricInfo season archive.
Match details:http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/engine/match/304565.html
It did turn out to be Bill's last great act of defiance.
In those early days of his captaincy Chappell never made a secret of the fact that he desperately wanted Lawry in all his teams. National selector Phil Ridings, announcing Lawry as MOM, rated the innings among the very best he had seen, so presumably Bill had 33% of the selection panel on side, as well as the support of the skipper. Notwithstanding all that, less than a month later and with no obvious 'bolter' scoring a mountain of runs in the meantime, he was left out of Ashes 72 - alongside Redpath.

LOL ...
Bill Lawry didn't do quite as well in his appearance in the 1970-71 ODD series (which was indeed the V&G cup)!

"Vehicle and General Knockout" sounds like stockcar racing, or dodgems ("bumper cars" in Oz?).
Carcrash for Bill, anyway.

Re: Kerry Packers War...
They just showed Episode 1 on BBC4.
Poor old Gary Cosier, eh? "You're a nosy bastard aren't you, Cosier?" No wonder he moved to the West Indies and pretends to be Windian these days.
Most of the likenesses were passable, I thought, although their Lillee was a little short and podgy.
The cheesiest bit was when the floodlights came on... "Kerry!....Night time cricket!"
Other good lines:
"Kerry says he's sick of looking at batsmens arses"
"Get me some f*cking pies will you!"
"If they don't cooperate they'll walk straight in to a meat mangler!"
"What we need is someone with deep pockets...and big balls!"
"He's a barbarian. He doesn't realise this is not just a game. Its more than that"
