re: my previous comment ..... didn't realise Grieg retired straight after WSC.
Well, of course. Retired WITH WSC, I suppose you could say.

It was a hoot - it was a summer not much drier than this and the temperature was about 18 celcius - and there's Walker with his face smeared in sun cream - "casually" rubbing it into the ball.

I don't think it was illegal in those days. Graham DIlley used to do it all the time as well.

Okay okay, Woodrow - so I tuned in and out (checking other channels for something a bit more interesting and less ghastly, while enjoying a few drinks), and missed a few minutes of the endless three-farqin-hour Ben-Hur-With-Taxis-and-Tiny-Tempaaaahhh-Limos farqin epic, OKAY?
Happy now?

They used up all the world stocks of zinc oxide at one point. Deano and White Lightning used to use it as warpaint.

I was there for a good part of that series & i recall that the weather was not that bad. I also don't recall that there was much in the press about Packer untill the Ashes were over....but i might be mistaken. I was p!ssed a good deal of the time.

Re: Kerry Packers War...
That was actually covered in the 1st ep last night. During early negotiations Greigy asked the Goanna for a job post-WSC (which was in the comm box), given that his England career would surely be over, as well as a loan to buy a house in Aus (both of which KP readily agreed to). I PMSL as Griegy was represented in these negotiations by ... wait for it ...PeterCS wrote:btw: Is that a young(ish) Tawny Grigg co-commentating with Lawry? I didn't realise he got a TV contract so soon after retirement. Must have been about 86? (Not Grieg.)
...Bruce Francis.
The Big Goanna put him in his place real quick.

Re: Kerry Packers War...
Hookes's own account of that moment when he told TGW he was out was very different. As I recall reading it, he fronted Packer in his office in Macquarie Street, agent in tow, and went through that 'thank you for picking me' stuff, Packer asked about the sign-on money, Hookes said he'd return it forthwith, Packer said, 'well thanks David for coming in, before you go there's something I'd like you to see, could you come with me for just a moment?'
Next thing he knew, DH was standing in a conference room surrounded by reams and reams of WSC promotional material with his face all over it. Packer, who had yet to raise his voice since Hookes first showed up, let him soak it up and his head swell for just long enough, then explained that 'all this stuff is useless' if Hookes backed out, and he'd have to re-shoot and print the lot, and showed DH the bill. It looked like a telephone number, and KP, still deathly quiet, told him he'd be getting the next one.
The manager told KP there and then that 'David will happily play for you on the agreed terms'.
About three weeks later David tried to eat an Andy Roberts bouncer and was rushed to hospital in the back of KP's Merc.
