Re: The Golf Thread (III)
No idea tbh. There's barely been any golf since the US Open.
If the wind is up (and it is today). Going to go boring and say McIlroy/Morikawa. Slightly more exciting pick would be Fleetwood.
Outside top 10, I guess could be groper Olesen.
I would've liked to say Cantlay, but his major record is laughably bad for a player of his success. One or 2 rounds where the wind is up will kill his chances (as he hasn't blitzed any tournament by 5 or 6 strokes when conditions are benign).

Just seen that Xander won the JP Mcmanus pro am as well. He'll be favourite. Obviously that means he'll fail in the main one.

And of course Oosthuizen lost the play-off in 2015 and won in 2010 for a total of -31 in 8 rounds. Basically, i have no ****** idea this time.
Should've retired post US open.

I like Fitzpatrick if the wind gets up.
I enjoyed the bits of the Scottish Open I saw where conditions were a bit tricky. Tricky's tip Fleetwood looked in pretty good nick.

Re: The Golf Thread (III)
I played St Andrews about a month before the 2000 Open. Greens were so fast I averaged 3 putts per hole! I even missed a 18 inch par putt on the first!
Can't recall how I went on the second hole but I do remember being stunned at the size of the double green.

Couple of excellent rounds for Cam Smith - A 5 under 67 followed by an 8 under 64.
Adam Scott shot 7 under after an even par 1st round.

Tiger potentially saying farewell to St Andrews… while there will probably be a couple more Opens there before his exemption runs out, whether he will be at the level of fitness to return is another matter.

Eyes on stalks from the golf. Am just loving it.
I am supporting anyone other than a LIV Tour gazillionaire like Johnson. I have long admired Poulter as an inventive shot maker. I found myself booing the screen when Poults was introduced to the 1st tee.

He looked pained throughout but clearly tried his guts out. Putts just would not drop.
Loved how the crowd celebrated him as well as his playing partners.

Re: The Golf Thread (III)
St Andrews tends to be the preferred venue for Open farewells - Palmer in 1995, Nicklaus in 2005, Faldo in 2015. Tiger seems set on playing further ones elsewhere though.horace wrote:beamer wrote:Tiger potentially saying farewell to St Andrews… while there will probably be a couple more Opens there before his exemption runs out, whether he will be at the level of fitness to return is another matter.

I was wondering how 62-year-old Mark Calcavecchia was there given the exemption cut-off is 60, but organisers allowed the 1989 champion a farewell appearance after his scheduled last one in 2020 was cancelled and he was injured last year.

Couldn't buy a putt last night.

Saw Smith first time when he was leading Lahiri by one in the Indonesian masters around 10 years ago less mullet and silly tash. Was his first or second Asian Tour event. He came second then and was clearly class.
Who'd have guessed he'd become so good. Winning the Players beating Lahiri and now looking like an Open champion heading into the last.

Just destined not to win another major, it appears. Done little wrong today but it just didn’t go for him and he ran into an inspired opponent, and not even the one most predicted.JGK wrote:Rory's home I reckon.

Re: The Golf Thread (III)
Stenson apparently set to defect to LIV. Rory might have to be called upon for Ryder Cup captain’s duty ahead of schedule, as nearly all the likely candidates for the next few years have taken themselves out of contention now! Either that or go back to the oldies…
Might be a question as to whether it should even go ahead, the chances of Europe being able to field a competitive team look remote.

Ferkin Huzzah!!!!
After watching his uninspiring 3rd round until 2.30 am Saturday night I could only manage 1.00 am this morning.
Cam was playing solid golf but nothing amazing. Rory looked like he was going to be too good.
But obviously Cam's putter ran hot in the 2nd 9.
Great result to wake up to.
Go the Mullet and silly stash!!!!
