"The Socceroos' elongated path to World Cup qualification takes them to a country where a constitutional crisis has compounded chronic political instability and an appalling human rights record is obscured by the inhabitants' obsession with sport.

But first they must play in Honduras."

Nice.

expecting 0-0, then 1-1 in the return game. Resulting in us being tipped out on away goals.

Of course. The lack of an away goal opens up the chance for Honduras to go through with a score draw on Wed night.

Oh dear Italy. 0-0 this morning to send Sweden through.

First time since 1958 that the Azurri has not taken part in a WC.

That is pretty funny.

Referees can relax now; will not have to be nearly so vigilant for the deliberate dive.

It'll be a remarkable effort if Honduras win. It'll be less than 5 days since the tie on the cow paddock in Honduras.

Aus chartered a flight back home whereas Honduras took the long commercial route - in economy class!! They'll be as jet-lagged as a jet-lagged jet-laggy thing.

Still, it's not beyond Aus to choke. Get Timmy Cahill in the starting XI and let him get two headed goals in the 1st Half, please.

Yes, a famous moment of loss of momentum for Aus, W.

We were all over Iran at the MCG in 1997. From 2-0 just after half time, we fell apart after the dickhead serial pest ran onto the park and cut the Iranian net, delaying play by 20 mins or so. Iran came back to draw 2-2 (3-3 agg but away goal advantage) and eliminate us from the 98 WC.

That was a heartbreaker, watched from Cairns with a good mate. I remember it like yesterday, and it ranks with Gary Buckenara's 1989 torpedo, the Thommo-Tavare-Miller pinball finish in Melbourne, McDermott's Helmetball and Kasper's Glovewave as my biggest personal disappointments in Australian sporting history.

Yep. Australia didn't lose a match in the entire WC qualifying campaign that season.

You have left out Marto's brainfade spoon to point at the SCG (with McSofty carting 4s at the other end) v SAffers in 1993 to expose Pidg to Fast Fanny.

This lead my little bro to turn to me and say "will you stop coming up here at Christmas" (we had the Helmetball heartbreak the previous summer). I sadly conceded he was right. No

Typical ponderous, low skill effort by Aus. 0-0 at HT.

We really need more balls into Timmy Cahill to work his head magic.

2-0 OZ with 18 plus injury time left, TC subbed off

Ownie and a penalty the ref took a week to rule on so not massively convincing, but who gives one?
