Arrgghhhhhh! Can't believe Strauss said they're going to "learn the lessons" of that defeat! What lessons you rw@t? What, you're not going to ever lose again then? You're going to remember to bowl better? What are you blithering on about? Surely, surely the law should be changed so that anyone is allowed to crunch the balls in a vice of any losing captain who still has the nerve to utter that wanqish, ar5eworthy meaningless phrase.

Hell, we can't really moan. We've had a cracking 18 months with winning the T20 and 3 innings wins in Aus to win the Ashes.
I am going to go and find a branding iron with 'YORKER' and seek out a few players though...

Re: World Cup 2011
Of course, Kevin O'Brien edged straight to first slip before he'd scored a run.
Although, at 110-5, defending 330, it would've been borderline kamikaze to bring in a slip and try and take the wicket of a new batsmen, so in reality he just edged into an empty space of indifference and chalked up freebie boundary number one.

The thing is, you just know that the next time they have any side at 100 odd for 5, he still won't have any slips there. He's the worst England ODI captain in recent memory.Dello wrote:Of course, Kevin O'Brien edged straight to first slip before he'd scored a run.

Re: World Cup 2011
Considering all the people who you've had arguments with on this forum, I'm pretty much the only person that's not had a dig, adding to that the fact I put a wink at the end, added to the fact that OBVIOUSLY it's more farking embarassing for England to lose to Ireland than India to tie with England, I think it would be fairly safe to say I was joking and not having a go at India.Batman wrote:vilkrang wrote:Jeez, learn to take aBatman wrote:vilkrang wrote:You should be embarassed, your team couldn't beat this England side!Batman wrote:Ha!

Yeah, it's all good - everyone knew the World Cup would be like the Challenger crashing into the Titanic. And then forcibly having sex with the charred remains of the cabin crew. Because, bottom line, England's ODI cricket is abysmal. They'll sneak the odd series here and there, yet the nagging feeling will always be that no real progress has been made and, when a proper tournament comes around, we'll stink the place out like a corpse's gusset.
And that's exactly how it plays out. Every time.
Test cricket's going lovely. But then the nagging feeling remains that if basically the same players can capitulate so regularly and fecklessly in a different format, surely there's got to be some kind of seepage/crossover looming on the horizon for the Test side...

It's true. The funny thing is, they only recalled him to the team on the strength of his captaincy. And since then, his batting's been excellent and his captaincy shite.
Re: World Cup 2011
Never said or thought you were joking at India, Vilky. Like I sarcastically commented above that we were knocked out by a proper 'test' side last WC [Bangars]. You are taking it rather seriously now while I am still laughing at the result. Guess it's always funny while it happens to someone else while the rest of the people here were burning Indian team's effigies when we took a hit last WC.
I am trying really hard to stop it but can't stop laughing out loud yet so please bear with me some more.
On the other hand I seriously think we may be next ingredient on Irish creamed sandwich next. Looks like an Irish Sunday Special on the menu all the way.....

At least Tremlett hasn't been gang raped this tournament. Hopefully his confidence will remain in tact once the important stuff starts against England later this year. I worry about Jimmy now though, it's all very well saying test cricket is different but this has to have a negative effect on him.

We've seen his failing before though. We even mentioned it during the Ashes, but felt a bit silly doing so because we were crushing the opposition and of course we saw it during most of the one day series in Australia.

Re: World Cup 2011
I really hope someone mentions to Strauss that he could have had O'Brien on 0. If a loss to Ireland can't make him change his strategy then nothing will.

If Broad's crocked again (which is different to just being a crock, again) the BFG will join the sinking ship in time for the South African flaying.
Thinking about Tremlett - he was sat on the bench today with Bopara and Shahzad, while the slow, jelly-armed, bald (probably unimportant) and entirely useless (unless he's an organ donor. And even then, you'd shop around) James Tredwell was on for the closing 15 overs as the sub fielder.
Tremlett's not up to much, but you can't tell me Ravi Bops is a worse fielder than Tredwell, or that Shahzad is slower and less athletic. Can you? Dare you?
Damn you.

Re: World Cup 2011
Actually its worth remembering England only won by 3 runs in our last ODI in Ireland, and in reality they should have knocked us out of the T20WC prelim stages in the West Indies.
Is this really the biggest WC shock though? I'd rate this Irish side better than Kenya who beat the Sri Lankans (then recent WC winners) in Sith Efrica.

the biggest shock still has to be aus vs zimmers
other notables - windies vs kenya 96, pak vs bangles 99 (though that has some question marks) and pak vs ireland 07

Re: World Cup 2011
Really hope we don't go through after this, even though one more win would more than likely do it. We'll probably scrape through to the quarter-finals, and perhaps produce our one half decent performance in 7 and somehow make the last four. Better if it was like last time where one defeat to a minnow and you're virtually on the plane home, instead of stringing this out for another two or three weeks.
Any of the seven serious teams in this competition would have won by 150-200 runs. Sounds like a remarkable innings from O'Brien but would any proper bowling and fielding side have allowed it?
What's the record for the quickest sacking of an England captain or coach after an Ashes win? Even if it's just from a different format of the game!
