You can't call World Cup ODIs JAMODIs. They're the only meaningful ODIs. All right, the meaning isn't much, but it's more than nothing. But not by much.
Re: World Cup 2011
This group stage is JAMODI, I mean even after this England will have to try quite hard not to get through.
It's been set up so clearly to make sure the major sides qualify, that it's effectively a month-long warm-up event followed by an 8-team knockout competition, that's the only stage it becomes meaningful.

beamer wrote:Really hope we don't go through after this, even though one more win would more than likely do it. We'll probably scrape through to the quarter-finals, and perhaps produce our one half decent performance in 7 and somehow make the last four. Better if it was like last time where one defeat to a minnow and you're virtually on the plane home, instead of stringing this out for another two or three weeks.
Any of the seven serious teams in this competition would have won by 150-200 runs. Sounds like a remarkable innings from O'Brien but would any proper bowling and fielding side have allowed it?
What's the record for the quickest sacking of an England captain or coach after an Ashes win? Even if it's just from a different format of the game!
Can't get through the group with just 5 points though can you?

Apparently Ireland were 400-1 to win at one stage! Anyone have a flutter?

Stupid format. Not that the Banglas are going to be gimmies at home given what we just saw....

Got to play the Bangles yet at their home stadium, the Eternal Flame.
Something something something, Susannah Hoffs. Indeedy.

And even without the India tie we'd probably get through with 4 points on NRR in that scenario!JKLever wrote:beamer wrote:Eng beat Ban & Hol, tie with Ind = 5 pointsJKLever wrote:Can't get through the group with just 5 points though can you?

I'll never think of the term "Ashes" in quite the same way again.Dello wrote:JKLever wrote:Dello wrote:Captain Megaspaz.
I think that'll stick...
Hell, we can't really moan. We've had a cracking 18 months with winning the T20 and 3 innings wins in Aus to win the Ashes.
I am going to go and find a branding iron with 'YORKER' and seek out a few players though...
Yeah, it's all good - everyone knew the World Cup would be like the Challenger crashing into the Titanic. And then forcibly having sex with the charred remains of the cabin crew. Because, bottom line, England's ODI cricket is abysmal. They'll sneak the odd series here and there, yet the nagging feeling will always be that no real progress has been made and, when a proper tournament comes around, we'll stink the place out like a corpse's gusset.
And that's exactly how it plays out. Every time.

Re: World Cup 2011
I am actually still optimistic about England's prospects. Provided they go through, they've still got a good chance of winning the thing. Apart from anything else, luck plays a massive part (as I've said before).JKLever wrote:ever hopeful wrote:Arrgghhhhhh! Can't believe Strauss said they're going to "learn the lessons" of that defeat! What lessons you tw@t? What, you're not going to ever lose again then? You're going to remember to bowl better? What are you blithering on about? Surely, surely the law should be changed so that anyone is allowed to crunch the balls in a vice of any losing captain who still has the nerve to utter that wanqish, ar5eworthy meaningless phrase.
You're not sounding that hopeful EH?
But I just hate that whole 'learning lessons from this defeat' bullsh1t. It's such a tosspottian thing to say because it suggests every loss makes you better, which is obviously an oxymoron. It's not just Strauss either, they all do it. Why don't they ever just say, "Yup, they stuffed us! Sorry about that, fans. Maybe we'll win next time though."

Guys, I've been busier than a Beirut brickie for the past few weeks, and head out for another four days on the road this morning, but really had to drop in and break my self-imposed exile for a few minutes after waking up this morning to hear this result.vilkrang wrote:I'm not too worried about them, a few ashes photos tends to have them weeping again. Yes vilks, it's no Ashes, but it's farkin hilarious nonetheless. And when Drunky and his band of idiots find a way to c*ck up Australia's defence of the title, this will be a little gem to hold on to.
Well done Paddy-men, and even those Paddies-by-choice-or-convenience.
Cricket gold.

Waiting for Bannie media to suggest match fixing.
Congrats to the Paddies

Weird isn't it? I was cheering Ireland on over the last 10 overs, would have been a shame if they hadn't finished the job but they totally deserved to, was an amazing comeback.ever hopeful wrote:Everyone seems very chirpy about this. A perfect result then?

Can't begrudge the Oirish their day in the sun. It was a deserving match-winning knock from O'Brien if ever there was one.
The flat-lining standard of England's cricket out there in the field under pressure - and under no pressure in the slightest - isn't really worth busting a blood vessel over. It was nothing new or unexpected.
A victory for the more professional, driven and fearless side.

Re: World Cup 2011
So, when's the next non-minnow-bashing match? Tomorrow's games should both be over very quickly. I suppose NZ v Zim and WI v Ban could be competitive if the underdogs perform at their best.
Then we've got SL v Aus (should have been the group decider, maybe still could be) and more minnow-bashing in Yarpies v Yarpie Rejects.

Strauss dropped O'Brien in the 90s though at that point the damage had been done.JGK wrote:How many catches did England drop?
Oh, and O'Brien edged straight to first slip when he was on 0, whilst his team were on 110-5. No dropped catch though, Strauss didn't think that the situation needed a slip.

Two "take a bows" in the commentary of the report on Ireland's victory. Has Andy Gray returned to Sky and infiltrated their cricket coverage?

Also Prior dropped a skier... that doesn't look right. Sky-er. Skier. Skyer. I hate seemingly simple words that I've never considered how to spell before. Life was so much less fiddly before the internet.
Prior dropped a top-edged hook which he really ought to have taken.
And Jimmy A's epic quest to do nothing right branched out into catching when he palmed a fairly routine chance on the boundary into the crowd.
Yardy shelled a c&b.
There were probably some others too. The wheels came tumbling off to such a degree that I lost track. Few overthrows in the mix somewhere along the line also. Maybe. Almost certainly.
