NRL player Robert Lui stood down after assault charge

Wests Tigers halfback Robert Lui's career is in limbo after he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend and stood down by the NRL club.

Police were called to Lui's home in North Strathfield about 7pm yesterday and found a woman with swelling to her face.

Lui, 21, was arrested and taken to Burwood police station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was given bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on October 7.

The Tigers said in a statement that Lui co-operated fully with police and the player and his partner, Taleah Rae Backo, will be offered counselling by the club.

The alleged incident came three days after the Tigers were eliminated from the 2011 finals when they were beaten by the Warriors in a semi-final.

In September last year, Lui was charged with nine offences related to allegedly assaulting Ms Backo, who was pregnant at the time, just hours after his team was knocked out of the NRL finals.

Lui has since reunited with Ms Backo and has become a father.

Those assault charges were dismissed in April.
