Well that was surprising.
I suppose.
I couldn't believe the FA actually stood Terry down.

What exactly did Capello say in Italy apart from defending John Terry? Will he retire now, like he said at the time of his appointment, or go back to Spain or Italy and settle at some moneybags club like Malaga or a struggling club like Inter?

is it kind of not the point that a sportsperson in his position shouldn't even be getting arrested though, let alone for something as sensitive as (alleged) racism?
I agree he shouldn't have been captain, but most footballers aren't exactly moral compasses. Or don't seem to be.

Yep, he should not have been reappointed after being sacked for screwing a team mates wife. However a manager should be allowed to appoint the captain. Overruling him is a vote of non confidence.

Apparently the cat now has 20,000+ followers on Twitter FFS. See hereG.Wood wrote:Dello wrote:Carroll? How is it even possible for a young person to move so slowly - let alone a professional athlete.
He's basically a hairy lump. That's what £35 million buys you: a bloke off the streets.
Kenny should have kept the cat on and taken Carroll off

To your first point: Exactly!! FFS, to borrow an old one, what on earth message does that give to everyone out there?
He should be allowed to, but that he wants to pick the screwing around, arrested-for-something-bad guy says something about him as a manager too. A bad something.

Most English football supporters don't have 2 brain cells to share between themselves. It's an easy option for spasticated knobs with closed minds to blame the foreign coach.

Subtle difference.
I'm no Chelsea fan - but I'd have to say that Terry (stupidly as he allegedly acted against QPR) was an excellent captain and a excellent full back. Perhaps not so excellent a full back now that his legs are giving way - but, no matter what one thinks (or believes) of the guy, I'd take him any day in England's back four ... ahead of Ferdinand and the rest.
There's no doubting Terry's passion for England - something which I'll wager the other 10 in the team fall well behind on.
Agree, the FA cocked this one up (along the lines of the RFU a few months back) in firstly relieving Terry of the armband and secondly, over ruling the England manager.
Total f**king shambles ... and so now they clamour for Rednapp.
I'd go for Mourinho ... £10 million a year ought to prise him out of the Bernabeu!

Capello -
"I have spoken to the [FA] chairman and I have said that in my opinion one cannot be punished until it is official and the court - a non-sport court, a civil court - had made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he is accused of."
Absolutely the right attitude - a man of principle.
Best England manager (win percentage wise) according to these stats:
Fabio Capello P 42 W28 D 8 L 6 Win percentage 66.7
Sir Alf Ramsey 113 69 27 17 61.1
Glenn Hoddle 28 17 6 5 60.7
Ron Greenwood 55 33 12 10 60
Sven-G Eriksson 67 40 17 10 59.7
Walter Winterbottom 139 78 33 28 56.1
PS - No mention of the Umberella Man !!

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
The ridiculous situation of it taking 9 months to settle a court case over a racist comment has caused this... could turn out for the best though. Capello was driven by short-termism as he was leaving anyway, someone fresh or temporary could come in and give the "new manager boost" where it rarely happens, i.e. at a major tournament itself. Little to lose really, if we lose every game in Ukraine they can blame the off-field turmoil!
It's probably going to be the constant cycle now, expensive foreign manager doesn't win us a trophy, get the passionate Englishman in - said Englishman fails to even qualify, get another expensive foreigner.

Mourinho won't touch the England job with a bargepole.
Yes, the FA cocked up - they should have relieved Terry of the captaincy in October.
I don't think there's any appetite for another foreign coach - so Harry it is, unless someone wants to put forward a persuasive case for Neil Warnock!

I would reckon John Terry hasn't played at full back since he was teenager, Merls.
Dementia kicking in?

RE: Capello - good on him. He's better off out of it.
The FA have been complicit in the witch-hunt of two of their key "employees" (coach and captain) and, as they always do, feebly trying to appease the media and so-called public opinion in order to look like they know what they're doing.
English football will never amount to anything while the governorship of it remains solely committed to protecting it's own position of power.
Frankly, the importance of captaincy in football is an overhyped load of nonsense in any case. Anyone can do it. You don't control the tactics. You don't have to make bowling changes. You toss the coin, shake a few hands. Maybe shout "come on!" occasionally.
Anyone can do it.
What a fuss about nothing.
Still, we'll get an Englander in now. That'll solve everything. Get Harry in. Once he deploys Bale, Modric and Van Der Vaart behind Adebayor, we'll be unstoppable...

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
How many of the players selected for England really, really want to play for their country? Give the likes of Rooney et al the choice of winning the Champions League or the Euoros, or even the World Cup - what would they choose? There are, after all, plenty of supporters who cry "club before country"

Rooney didn't even want to play for his club last season, when he worried that Man City were on the rise (and paying their players more than he was on).
Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
My bad - I meant centre back .... easily done when distracted by some of the crap spoofed on here about Terry.
Short memories with some people ...
But no ... no dementia as yet...!
And Baz ... yep, I do know a thing or two about footie, ol' son.

While you can blame Terry, Capello, the FA or Anton Ferdinand for this mess, the justice system is clearly most to blame. The FA should have said sod this, we'll have our own hearing if the courts can't be arsed to sort it until July.
One side effect of this could be Spurs' season going into meltdown, due to either Redknapp leaving or the uncertainty, letting Arsenal or Chelsea off the hook in terms of CL qualification and perhaps saving the job of their manager.
