He used to be brilliant, but everything after The Eminem Show was a significant downward turn in quality, although he still produces the odd decent track. The Eminem Show was his last decent album though I think.

Bands that were influenced by the bands I mentioned have almost certainly sold billions of albums between them. Led Zep and Black Sabbath have a pretty strong case for inventing heavy metal, more so with Sabbath, and metal is the biggest selling genre in the world.
Punk? Like I said, pretty much dead.
If stating facts is "chucking out clichés" then so be it.
Meh... the fact is it was a large and rich tapestry that began to be woven well before the 70's. Zepplin were influenced by acts like Muddy Waters, Moby Grape, John Lee Hooker... even their contemporaries like Jimi. Sabbath... well Ozzy says he was influenced by the Beatles, Cream, Earth... even Led's first incarnation - The Yardbirds... Tony Iommi reckons he was influenced by Django Reinhart. The 70's witnessed an explosion of subgenre, with bands feeding off each other... influences came from a broad selection and hence it's a subjective thing... I loathe the word 'rock' as a genre anyhow. What 'rock' means is up for debate. As for punk, it has never been a media for competing in record sales that a load of dickweeds listen to... as a genre it's as nihilistic as it has ever been... a lot of these 'Nu' Metal bands would hold more of their influences in punk, I'd say... having read / heard many of them articulate on this I'd call it a 'fact'. And 'Punktions' around the country week in week out mocks some schlep saying it's a dead genre.
Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
I said it was pretty much dead and at best a niche.
I'm feeling a bit bad now, do you actually know what niche means? Because I can't imagine these "Punktions" you mention being anything other than a niche.

So, you're saying Punk was something other than niche? Oh, are we just on about the Sex Pistols, maybe the Buzzcocks then? Yeah, I don't think 'Punk' lasted much past 1980. Doesn't mean it hasn't influenced a shitload of today's acts.
But, that banal and supercillious 2nd sentence was probably a better thing to put to a very concise post on the subjectivity of 'Rock', the broad influences that intermingled between yesterday's and today's music. I salute your clamouring need to be right.

I often admit when I'm wrong, particularly on this forum in fact. Not sure where you got the "clamouring need to be right" line from.
Of course different bands are influenced by different artists, I just disagreed with Mr Geldof as to which bands from the 70s had a bigger impact.

I disagreed with him too.
As for Punk... well, I'd go as far to say that ALL of Nu Metal (a massive genre) is Americanised mongs who listened to punk but are too weaselcocky to be able to accept punk fully. It's easy to tell, I'd say. It's still power chords, fuzz-blend overdrive, maybe distortion on the bass, double-beat drums, shouting backing vocals etc... difference being they use more poppy melodies and bleeding heart quasi-crooning rather than stunted, short bursts of spoken venom. It's incredibly distinct where their influences have come from.

Because I don't think you're right, either.
And we're not arguing. I'm saying that punk still holds influence on at least decent sized chunk of today's music, this can be seen as fact should you map out the chords used, style of distortion placed on the instruments, when the backing vocals come in and what parts they emphasise, how the rhythm section is played....
Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
That's fair enough, but I wasn't saying it didn't have any influence. I was saying that other bands have a greater claim to have "changed rock music".Brass Monkey wrote:vilkrang wrote:Then what the fark are we still arguing for?

Aye, I agree that if there was a 'if I had to pick one..' sort of question, I'd be straight down the route you took, but there's so many who had their say on history.

Badger (the band) was not as successful as the name might suggest.

Badger was looking pretty fit at the Hobart Test. Was tempted to yell out "Give Badger a bowl".

Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
"When a honey badger preys on a snake, the snake is not intimidated by it.
The snake will be the first one to attack and bites the badger, but the honey badger will pass out for several minutes, then get back up and keep on pursuing its prey.
Then the snake will strike again, and again, and again but in the end the fearless honey badger will get back up and kill the venomous tired snake.
The other animals will stay at a distance thinking how crazy the honey badger is, but the honey badger doesn’t care about their laughter or anything, for it want to eat, and this day nothing will stop it from eating.
The determination of a honey badger is what we must have when life hits us, no matter how many times life hits you got to get back up and continue with your quest till you find success."
