cannot agree about Cold Chisel - at best a good pub band with the musicality and interest of Midnight Oil...
give me the Saints, Specials, Ian Dury, Nick Cave, paul kelly, Divynals, post mod French gypsy music
"Rock music in the seventies was changed by three bands—the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and The Saints". (Bob Geldof)
He doesn't even have any authority to say that either, it's not like he was hugely successful. If it weren't for Band Aid then no one would have heard of him.
Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin changed rock music in the 70s. Bands are still influenced by them to this day, whereas punk is pretty much dead, or a niche at best.

She was a siren that produced magical songs. OK, there was a lot of late 70's London arts pretention, but what lovely songs. I used to hate her but not any more. I'm not like the hugest fan.

Yes!

Oooh yeah??? Yeah? Me too. Still, I was part of a largeish Mod revival (before I realised they were all qunts)... Secret Affair?

Sorry Wall, I was on about 'Purple Hearts' come to think of it. An entirely different band. I have heard some of 'The Purple Hearts' stuff, it's pretty decent anyhow - so the sentiment is still there.

Hehe. I know. The Aussie band were quite a few years earlier than the British one. Mid sixties.

Aye, heard they reunited? Funny thing was, I think it was the same time as the British one
Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
I thought only bogans or pissheads on tours of Bali liked Cold Chisel

I didn't catch The Loved Ones at the time but I vaguely recall another band, Gerry and the Joy Boys (ACDC had a problem with gay venues trying to book them on the basis of the name - this mob would have had the same hassle), who did a good cover of Buddy Holly's 'Rave On', which absolutely eats the later John Cougar Melonhead effort.
Amazing talent, years ahead of his time, after that incredible strangulato on Ever Lovin Man you wondered how he'd ever be able to sing again (and no he wasn't Barry's brother, or even his third cousin twice removed, forcefully or otherwise. Check the spelling....).

Would drop Nick Cave and Dobson simply because I have not heard much of them. Else Good picks would throw in Divinyls, Mental and Icehouse for good measure. I take it that Crowded house includes Split Enz as well they had some good numbers.Paul Keating wrote:My best Oz/NZ singers/groups/bands

Another song that has an immediate effect of switching channels on me is American pie. Simpleton music padding up lyrics that a Southern Evangelist from the US might endorse.

Gerry and the JB was pretty much the same as the Loved Ones tho a little less edgy....you are dead right about the vocals on 'ever lovin man'....when I saw him again in the early 90s his voice not surprisingly was somewhat shot in a Tom Waits kind of way...made the vocals even more evocative

Aye, if it wasn't for Sabbath and Led Zeppelin we wouldn't have Creed and Maroon5
Although, no Pistols, Saints, Ramons then no Nirvana

Plea for Purging, "apparently". The above is a popular form of pic where the funniest looking head is put on all people in the photo, in this case, the fat guy's. Some bloke at work was rabbiting on about them and I came across the funny pic on Damn LOL. Lead singer (the fat guy) has a voice like you like listening too.

Gerry and the Joy Boys
I thought the Joy Boys were Col Joye's backing band.

Hold.... hold it... HE doesn't have any authority to say that? Last I checked, he released more singles than you have.
Keep chucking out cliches, man.

Bands that were influenced by the bands I mentioned have almost certainly sold billions of albums between them. Led Zep and Black Sabbath have a pretty strong case for inventing heavy metal, more so with Sabbath, and metal is the biggest selling genre in the world.
Punk? Like I said, pretty much dead.
If stating facts is "chucking out clichés" then so be it.
