I have never understood the appeal of U2, rate Nickelback though
And lardy and I had a discussion about Coldplay, another band I like. Needless to say, he feels they are no Little Feet.
Lardy attempted to "educate" me in real music on a pissy Friday night in Hobart, as he proudly showed me the 7,700 songs he had on his Macbook. I think we listened to bits of about 5000 of them. [awaits lardy's indignant response ]
I think we worked out that other than a few Beatles songs, the only song we had in common on our respective mp3 playlists was Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street.
You and Lardy were comparing playlists? That's a serious bromance .

Cold Chisel: Highly revered by many Australians. Have had several goes and still don't see what the deal is. Jimmy Barnes is a good vocalist in terms of his octave range however other than one or two of CC's songs the rest all seem to be mostly noise delivered over a wide octave range.
No no no no no.
Chisel are quite simply, legands. Forget the vocals, which are iconic if nothing else, the quality of the songwriting is incredible for what is ostensibly a pub rock band. This comes out more if you hear remakes or covers of some of their songs without the "noise".
Try a playlist of
Flame Trees; when the war is over; choir girl; Cheap wine; khe San and bow river for starters.

Aye! Never have and never, ever will.
The worst part about her? People think she's a 'serious' artist... i.e. not formula-pop and video-driven...
F*ck me... amongst the worst around now.

Well, I tried to logon to the Net on his Macbook (to catch up on Bails) after a boozy evening out before realising he didn't have Wireless Internet. So he played some music instead, prompting a long discussion about our respective musical tastes. I'm sure I heard the word "Philistine" muttered under his breath several times because I didn't dribble over the predominantly late 60s/early 70s collection on his Macbook. I just said "I likes what I likes" whereas lardy is more of a student of music and understands and appreciates the finer subtleties of the quality of the instrument play and vocal range. He is pretty grouse on the guitar.JGK wrote:skully wrote:Cheers taips. Ditto. Heard some guy once analyse U2's baffling success and conclude that the appeal is that the songs are so simple that most "common" people can sing along.taipan wrote:G.Wood wrote:Radiohead - what beige sounds like

"Song writing" refers to the lyrics or the music itself. My comments on CC are about the music.JGK wrote:Josh Carney wrote:you rate:

I wouldn't touch anything Lady Ga Ga with a barge-pole, unless smacking her very hard behind the ear with it counts....
Chisel are simply the best Oz band ever. U2 were great until about 1990, but latterly they just grate. Bono's head has been so far up his bum all the time since that I suppose it's a miracle of modern science they can make any sound come out at all.

I loved the story about Bono coming out on stage & started slowly clapping his hands. After a while he announced that every time he clapped, a child in Africa dies.
A voice from the back of the hall shouts out "stop it then ya Bast@rd"
Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
Too good a story for me to GAF whether it's an urban myth or not - a bit like Billy Graham's anti-booze rant at the MCG with the donkey, the barrels of water and Fosters Lager and 'no you stupid Yank clot, all you've proved is it really is a donkey'.

I didn't realise how hated Nickelback were until I got over here.
Some of their stuff's decent.
I don't get Kate Bush. Don't like her stuff at all. Although I do like Placebo's version of Running Up That Hill and the Futureheads' Hounds of Love.
I don't get this whole 'Glee' phenomenon. What a load of bwalls.
Billy Joel, U2 pre 1990 and Coldplay - Parachutes and a few others songs, I like.

Probably the worst & most hated piece of 'music' ever produced.
Re: Bands / Singers you don't get or maligned Bands / Singers
hmmn...I expect I would like much of what is on the Lardy playlist...I rarely have the misfortune of listening to the modern elevator music that seems to infect the wireless nowadays...
cannot agree about Cold Chisel - at best a good pub band with the musicality and interest of Midnight Oil...
give me the Saints, Specials, Ian Dury, Nick Cave, paul kelly, Divynals, post mod French gypsy music

Off them now after their anti carbon tax tour.
Plus I remember having an argument as to who wrote the songs? Barnesy or Mossy.
Most said that Barnesy didn't have the brains to write good lyrics.
