Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12 (II)
Yep, every single one of them is better than Rooney's.skully wrote:Interesting how short people's memories are. This was the top 10 from just 3 years ago. And I would argue that Rooney's shine-drive doesn't match many of them. Di Canio's and Poyet's volleys are so clean if not cleaner than Rooney's. No doubting Rooney's was a great goal, but no. 1???
But that's the problem when you leave these things to public vote. It's why Ryan Giggs won SPOTY.
Also the more I see that Le Tiss goal against Newcastle the more I think it's the best goal that will ever be scored. All of the other goals I can see happening in some circumstances but no one will score a goal like that again. Makes Gazza's at Euro 96 look pretty tame in comparison.

Congrats to Chelsea on continuing their FA Cup dominance of recent years.
And the Arse's shitty effort v Norwich opens the door to Europe for Spurs.

Well played to Chelsea and well played to Andy Carroll for proving that he's not a rock on acid.

Have you learned nothing? Spurs will still contrive to f*ck it up. Trust me on this, it's more certain than a Jaapanese WC cricket choke.skully wrote:Arse's shitty effort v Norwich opens the door to Europe for Spurs.

Surely a choke would imply them being in a strong position in the first place though?Zat wrote:Have you learned nothing? Spurs will still contrive to f*ck it up. Also, do they even play cricket?

Vilks in mistaking the Jaapanese for Japanese shocker. Nasty.

Gotta be pleased about the result... who in their right mind wants to see another United side, wall-to-wall chock-a-block jam-packed full of tossers, win a title.

It is. Essentially you're one of the few people on the internet I enjoy arguing with, but then feel that we could have a beer and all would be cool.taipan wrote:Not sure if this is a compliment or not.

Suppose it'd be good to see someone different win the Premier League. Keep spreading it around.
The idea that a lower-mid-table bunch of nomarks can rummy up a sugar daddy and buy their way to a title rankles, though.
But it's to United's credit that they're such massive wankers that a charmless team of mercenaries who've completely distorted the financial landscape of football heavily in their favour are still preferable champions to Siralex and his omniqunts.
Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12 (II)
Oh come on. If a sugar daddy bought Southampton and bought the league you would be loving it. Same with me and Forest. No one will buy Forest though. I need to become a billionaire for them to have a chance.Dello wrote:vilkrang wrote:Legends. Utter legends.JGK wrote:Stoopid Newcastle.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12 (II)
Saints were bought by a billionaire - Marcus Liehberr, worth over £3 billion. Although he's dead now, his family and estate still remain in control of the club.
But it's run by Nicola Cortese, who is a football fan through and through and is committed not to treating the club like a computer game and hoovering up all the talent around and claiming hollow victories over teams who don't have such rich owners, but to developing Southampton's already excellent academy and coaching infrastructure so that the club can be a model of self-sufficiency that is an example to all teams.
They aspire to a style of playing and an army of home-grown graduates coming through that fit the style seamlessly - a la Barcelona.
I think it's a fantastic approach. Ambitious. Maybe unrealistic. But for a club owned by a billionaire to not go down the obvious route to success and instead invest in the long-term health of the organisation is refreshing.
