Carl is far more expendable than Rick. The younger Grimes has barely had a dozen lines this season.

S06E08 - Mid-season Finale

- After the collapsed tower breeches the wall, all the Alexandrians retreat to their house for safety. Deanna gets bit - her reaction - "well shit!!". As she fades she asks Michonne what she wants. She shrugs.
Ron lamely tries to trap and shoot Carl but only succeeds in attracting walkers into the house. Carl disarms him and says his dad was an asshole.
Rick finds Deanna slumped over crying Judith, but she hasn't turned yet. She tells Rick the Alexandrians are his people now. Walkers overrun Rick and Jessie's house and they all get trapped upstairs. Carol wants to kill Morgan's Wolf, but he stands in the way.
Morgan KOs Carol as she demands to kill the Wolf then Denise scones him. The Wolf grabs a knife and frees himself, taking Denise captive. Tara, Rosita and Eugene enter but have to throw down their weapons. The Wolf leaves with Denise and their guns.
Glenn and Enid climb the Wall and see Maggie trapped by zombies. Deanna goes down fighting as walkers go in for the kill.
Rick and Michonne cover everyone with zombie guts and they just walk out (erm WTF?). Sam keeps calling for Jessie. I hope the walkers grab him.

They don't even need to do that. Michonne survived for ages just by dragging around two (armless, jawless) walkers. That was, apparently, enough to cloak her.

I do wonder how it will end. I wonder if the writers even have any idea. or whether the show will eventually just quietly sizzle out two years from now with them still desperately traipsing around the southern and eastern United States, killing walkers, coming across psychopaths, taking about their feelings etc....

I'm sure you could randomise all the comments on Walking Dead, Theme of Groans, Lost, Grimm (? was that it?), and a couple of the other shows that get a weekly review on here; and I would be none the wiser.

If they are told that a certain season will definitely be the last one, I reckon they could have enough material/ideas to wrap things up nicely, but because they don't know, they just drag things on, and wrote the same story lots of different ways.

S06E09 - intense and satisfying.

- The main group wearing guts shuffles through the horde without incident (Sam survives for now unfortunately).
Meanwhile, Negan's biker boys hold up Daryl, Sasha and Abraham in the tanker. Daryl is taken to the back of the tanker to reveal what Negan's group has gained. The head biker is about to blow Sasha and Abraham away, when they are nuked. It's Daryl with a bazooka!!! He's dropped his man and blown the other farkers to smithereens.
As the main group continues to shuffle, Sam freaks out and gets bitten, then chewed up (huzzah!!). Jessie screams and is attacked, but grips Carl's hand. Rick has to chop her arm off. Ron spazzes out and is about to shoot Rick but Michonne drives her katanna through the little qunt, but he gets a distracted shot away, hitting Carl in the eye. Intense scene. At least Sam and Ron are toast.
Morgan's wolf starts to bond with the doc, and saves her from an attack, but gets bitten himself. Carol and Morgan have a heart-to-heart, but she can't wear his bullshit and says she should've killed him. He says "you can't". The wolf and the doc make a run for it but Carol takes him down, and later finished off by Morgan.
Rick begs that Carl be saved. In his horror and rage he staggers out to hack down as many walkers as he can. The group all band together and follow him (including the sooky Rev, and even ). In the Battle for Alexandria, the good guys all start hacking away. Glenn and Enid save Maggie, then just as Glenn looks gone again, Daryl, Sasha and Abraham appear over the wall to sub-machine the thronging horde to save him.
There's too many zombies but Alexandria is saved when Daryl dumps the fuel from the tanker into the lake and lights it up. The walkers are attracted to the flames and all silently shuffle into the inferno.
In the final scene, Rick tells the unconscious but surviving Carl that he now believes he can rebuild the wall and protect Alexandria, and show him the new world. Carl squeezes his hand.

S06E10 - The ship the fans apparently want.

- Pretty boring ep where Rick and Daryl go supply hunting and lock horns with an apparently decent guy whose friends call Jesus. After the boys happen upon a truck with supplies, he steals the keys and the truck. Then he gets a flat and they jump him, but he hitches without them knowing. Daryl wants to beat the shit out of him, and after Jesus saves Daryl from a zombie, the newbie is KOed and the truck ends up in a lake. They take him back to Alexandria.
Michonne follows Spencer outside. He's hunting. Carl and Enid are also outside. They come across a walker that Carl refuses to shoot and attracts back towards the town. The walker is Deanna and Carl gives Spencer the opportunity to put his zombie Mum down - which he does.
Michonne has a motherly moment back in Alexandria with Carl and Judith, then Michonne and Rick shoot the breeze about the day that was - and end up in the sack. Richonne has begun.

S06E11.

- Abraham and Rosita reunite in the sack, but he dreams about Sasha. He's after some flesh of a different shade. Carl finds out about Rick and Michonne and is cool with it.
Jesus takes Rick and the crew to his town, with a promise of greater resources. They find a crashed van on the way. They rescue a number of injured Jesus people from a nearby house.
They reach "the hilltop", a fortified settlement without ammo but plenty of food, and a history museum at its heart. The A-team meets the leader Gregory.
Maggie talks trade with Gregory, but he refuses. Rick is unimpressed, but Jesus promises to change Gregory's mind.
A trading crew returns to Hilltop missing some members. They were trading with Negan, who turned on them and has "Craig" as a hostage. One member Nathan stabs Greg, saying Negan required it. It ignites a fight with Nathan pining Rick, before copping a knife in the throat. Hilltop folk are horrified but Jesus says Nathan was a loose canon and coward.
Greg survives. Jesus tells the A-team about Negan and how ruthless he is. But his group, the Saviours. are key to their survival. But the A-team aren't afraid of the Saviours and want to confront Negan to get Craig back, in return for supplies.
Maggie talks to Gregory again, and he agrees to half. The Hilltop doc ultrasounds Maggie's baby. Glenn smiles. Abraham seems to be getting paternal.
A showdown with Negan is coming.

- Some relationship news. Tobin and Carol have hooked up, as have Tara and Dr. Denise. Abraham has dumped Rosita, clearly to jump into Sasha's panties.
The A-team plus Alexandria recruits and the Rev hit the Saviours compound, kill heaps in a savage battle, and free the Hilltop captive. Glenn and Heath kill their first non-walkers. It farks Heath up a bit. The Rev also makes his first kill, without batting an eyelid.
Just as all looks good, one last Saviour makes a run for it on Daryl's bike. They take him down but before they can interrogate or kill him a woman's voice comes over a walkie talkie. Whoever it is has Carol and Maggie (who were outside keeping lookout).
I'm guessing Negan is gonna be mighty pissed off at this move by Rick and crew.
