Apparently young Essex quick Tymal Mills worked Bairstow over proper in a CC game a couple of weeks ago. The signs were already there.....

He seems a fine prospect. He should retain his position for the SA series at least.

Although I think he should be retained for the third test of this series. Hard to judge a young guy on one test innings.

slow progress by the Windies ... effectively 4 for 9. They need to make another 150, somehow, to make things remotely interesting ... but I think they've already had their miracle in this game.

Bresnan is bowling half rat power. Never mind whether he bowls 85mph+ or not, he's barely reached 80 all morning.

And Broad seems to have lost a whole 10 mph off his typical pace last year. Isn't anyone in the England camp worried about this? I understand both he and Bresnan have had injuries, but to be holding back a whole 10mph is a lot. It must almost feel un-natural to them. Like they're bowling in the nets or something.

seems fast enough - look at the wickets column and ignore the speedometer

Yeah, but we're playing the Windies here. I'm not sure how forgiving the likes of Kallis and de Villiers would be in these conditions, on that pitch, against that bowling.

They'll cross that bridge when they get to it ... right now, it's the WIndies and they bowl to a plan !Henry wrote:Yeah, but we're playing the Windies here. I'm not sure how forgiving the likes of Kallis and de Villiers would be in these conditions, on that pitch, against that bowling.

70-7 and Strauss only had one slip in for Anderson - you couldn't make it up.
Take a massive effort to lose from here. Kudos to Samuels. He's really come of age on this tour.

Noticed that too, should have had Samuels out. Not the first time Strauss has been ultra defensive.
Had Samuels played against us in the Caribbean the Barbados test might have turned out differently for them.

Poor keeping from Ramdin who failed to move to snaffle a catch off Strauss.

Pretty meaningless in the context of the match situation, I suppose. He's kept well, Ramdin, by and large. Grassed Bell in the first innings and can't bat, mind you...
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
Cap'n negs strikes again. I suppose he wanted to give Trent Bridge a bonus payday.
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
Ooh, Nelson. I still fancy us to win. Oh, we have won. And left the score forever more on Nelson. That can't be good.
It feels like a defeat.

Kudos to Marlon Samuels, didn't think he had it in him to score this well in England tbh.
Professional performance by England, still think we'll need to turn it up a couple of notches on the notchometer for the saffers.
Interesting call as to what to do with Bairstow. You don't really want people learning how to play the short ball in a test match.

Samuels has always had the tools, it's just until recently he fancied being an dick rather than scoring Test runs... he's managed to maintain the dickitude whilst scoring Test runs - I think he went on a special diet. His doctor gave him a note.
As for Bairstow, he's absolutely shitting himself every time he goes out to bat. Can't be a good thing. Still, I don't think two innings is enough to condemn him, haven't seen too much shitter short ball playing from a specialist batsman - couple with his leaden-footed, proddy spin playing and it sort of doesn't bode well.
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
I've seen Taylor live and he coped with Tremletts short stuff admirably. Maybe just maybe the selectors have to bite the bullet and drop him and pick Taylor instead, harsh though it would be.
He's more of a nurdling 3 though isn't he, you want your number 6 to be a dasher.
Difficult one, Johnny B v Steyn & Morkel isn't funny.

Stokes is the one. Get him in. I feel it in my bones. And my bones are never wrong.
Fact of the day: I've never broken a bone of my own, but I did break a neighbourhood kid's leg in a game of headers and volleys with a shot so venomous, in attempting to block it, his leg was blown to smithereens, as though dropped into a box of live grenades.
Spent a year in a wheel chair in a full leg - ankle to hip - cast.
Fear my bones. They're both right and dangerous.

Rest Strauss for Edgbaston I say ... keep the uber-critiques on here temporarily happy anyway ....nowt to bleat aboot ... oh wait ... there's Bressers lack of pace ... Chef's plodding run rate ... Broadleys bouncer barrage ... Trotski's digging up the pitch ... Bairstowel's unease against the rising ball ... !

Bresnan MOM.
Fire up the old time machine and put a wager on that at the end of day one.
To be fair, he went around 8-60 from day two onwards. S'alright, I guess.

Ben Stokes will be injured by the time SA get here. Why, you ask? He's a crock. I feel it in his bones.

Haven't seen a minute of the day's play... my comment was only in response to Dello's '70-7 and one slip in' comment. Going back to my gripe the other day. Which you vehemently dodged responding to.
Remember?
You just couldn't answer my quite reasonable point.
You just screamed and screamed like a girl who lost her ice-cream to gravity.
But you know what, I only responded to Dello's comment because I saw you were about.
