I mindlessly C&Ped Gary's list, accepting his accuracy, and filled in the gaps, with a football joke. I also extended Don to Donald, out of respect.Brass Monkey wrote:Why do you keep calling 'Shikhar' 'Shiktar'? Racial? Let God be the judge.
Let Clive Hubert Lloyd be the judge.

G.
A jolly band of 17, and their manager.
1. Year?
2. Which of these had the best batting average in the series?
3. Best bowling average in the series? (here we should perhaps discount an opening batsman's one wicket for 15 runs, as unfair to the proper bowlers).
4. Best (career) Test batting average of this group?
5. Best (career) Test bowling average?
(bonus questions, only for the committed):
6. Tour manager?
7. What do the two men on the far right of the back and middle rows particularly have in common? (... errr, apart from being at the right end of a row, etc.)

Marty also all correct, as far as you got.
EDIT: and the two others you added.
But since Wally got the steam-powered dial-up in (aka broadband), he's unbeatable at these things.

I've just realised, *60* years ago.
Let's cherish Richie, Davo and Mr Morris for as long as we still have 'em. I'm not sure if any of the otehrs are still alive.

Woo, that's not bad.
Of course Harvey. The others hadn't only slipped my memory, they are far less familiar to me.
Oh, talking of sieve-like memory, ... there's the other question I meant to add to the 1953 photo:
("G8") How many Test captains can you see in the picture?

Given that the original Mr Deeds goes to town came in 36, that should be about Hammond.PeterCS wrote:H.

You may be right! I can only find SIX ...WideWally wrote:Seven????
The original Hass (49-53, on and off)
Arthur Morris (home v WI 51-52 and v Eng 54-55)
Ray Lindwall (in India 56-57)
Ian Craig (in SAf 57-58)
Richie (58-64)
Neil Harvey (1 Test in Eng, 61)
perhaps I've missed an emergency captain?

This, I think, is his other 200 against Australia, in '08. India didn't get cap numbering on their shirts till 2007 or 08. Apart from that, it doesn't look like the Eden Gardens, where he scored all his other centuries (since 07/08).PeterCS wrote:G.

Well spotted Trike - using the film clue.tricycle wrote:Given that the original Mr Deeds goes to town came in 36, that should be about Hammond.PeterCS wrote:H.

And of course you've got it - it is "the other Wally". (Though being socially neurotic like Fry and a number of other prominent English cricketers before him, to him it was always "Walter" - he hated what he clearly felt was the chummy/patronising "Wally".)
The squarish build of the batsman is another clue. As is his legendary driving power and timing on display here.
And his (occasionally) heroic "deeds" for England.
It's another fine Tom Webster cartoon, rejoicing in the announcement of WRH's availability to tour.
In the event - despite a 231* and an average of nearly 60 - it wasn't quite enough to pull England through the "olive-branch" series after Jardine's cricketing and PR demolition balls of four years previously.
