Women Quiz (calm down dear - it's only cricket)
The Women's Cricket World Cup (WCWC) starts in India on 31 January - as Woody might optimistically say, the women are almost upon us - so I have put together this topical quiz for Danny or anyone else anyone who may fancy a go in a spare moment.
It's in two parts.
Part A: WCWC; Part B: women's cricket in general.
A1. In what year and country was the first Women's Cricket World Cup?
A2. How many countries have taken part in every WCWC to date?
A3. How many countries have so far won the Cup?
A4. Who are the current holders, and runners-up?
A5. How many times has Australia won, in nine attempts?
A6. Who scored 229*, the highest individual innings in a WCWC so far?
A7. And who holds the highest overall batting average (74.92)?
A8. Which wicketkeeper holds the record of 40 WC dismissals?
A9. What was Australia Women's score v Denmark Women on 16 Dec 1997? - a. 312-5, b. 362-4, c. 412-3, d. 462-2?
A10. And what did Pakistan Women manage against Aus Women in the same tournament? - a. 17, b. 27, c. 37, d. 47?

Cheers for having a go, Trike - I half-wondered if this'd have to be merged either with the "Neither Agree Nor Disagree" or the "Completely Disagree" thread!
As to your answers, you have got most of them right. Feedback under the cowl: ....

- A1, A3, A5, A6, A9 and A7 (you answered the question! - the picture backs up the question, as it does with A6) are all correct as you answered them.
A2 - the question was: Which countries have taken part in EVERY WCWC to date! (You seem to have answered: Which countries have EVER taken part in ANY WCWC: in that case, there are others, such as Jamaica, T&T ...!)
Hint: It is a very limited number .....
A4 - half right!
So, only A8 (the picture again backs up the question), and A10 are still untried so far.

Re: Women Quiz (calm down dear - it's only cricket)
Part B is Women's Cricket more generally (Tests, etc.) ....
B1. In what decade did the first international Womens' Cricket matches take place? Which country is batting in the picture below? And who won that series?
B2. Who scored 242 v West Indies Women at Karachi in 2003-04 (currently the highest Test innings by a woman)?
B3. Who is this stalwart of Indian Women's cricket, still playing and current captain (also for the WC)?
B4. In what year were women admitted to the MCC? - a. 1919, b. 1949, c. 1969, d. 1999?
B5. What equipment innovation revolutionised women's cricket in 1997?
B6. In what year was the (English) Women's Cricket Association merged with the ECB? - a. 1968, b. 1978, c. 1988, d. 1998?
B7. Why was Sue Redfern dropped from an England Women's tour to Aus & NZ in December 1999?
B8. What is the national elite quartet of English women's cricket teams called?
B9. How many Women's Ashes Tests have been played since 2005? - a. 3, b. 5, c. 8, d. 15?
B10. In what year did the ECB first introduce tour fees and match fees for women? - a. 1986, b. 1997, c. 2005, d. 2011, e. Don't be silly old chap, they don't deserve a bean for flouncing around in their skirts.
B11. Which PhD student of Chemistry wrote this?:
Crucially, [from 2002] we also began to play against the boys. Men’s cricket was another step up and this took us out of our comfort zone. Suddenly the batters were being tested by quick, bouncy deliveries. Bowlers would have to be smarter and more accurate to avoid being smashed out of the park. It was a great challenge that ultimately gave us more confidence, and the improvements being made in all aspects of our game began to translate into success on the pitch.
B12. What cricket milestone did this player achieve in 2009?

- A2 Guessing it's just England, India, Australia and NZ. No clue. Jamaica and TT? Wowzers
A4 New Zealand runners up?
B1 30s, no idea who won.
B3 Mithali Raj
B4- '99, heard it on Sky's telecast during a women's 2020 I think.
B5- Trousers?
B6- '98
B9 5, I think. One off tests, and the only tests AFAIK now.
B10- Has to be one of the latter two, post ECB merger. Was it a new contract arrangement (the movement to semi and fully professional)?
B12- Claire Taylor was one of the Wisden cricketers of the year, iirc

Re: Women Quiz (calm down dear - it's only cricket)
Almost completely correct on everything you've tried!
- Spoiler:
- A2 - Not India: the only three ever-present countries (9 tournaments not including the imminent one) are the same three that have won it so far. - so, same answer as A3.
A4. That's right. Quite a surprise the traditionally mighty Aussies didn't make the final - only once before had they not been in the top two. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_Cricket_World_Cup
B1 - yes, it was in the Australian season 1934-35, a first "Women's Ashes". The photo - with an Aussie batting in a baggy hat! - is from the second of three Tests. England won that first ever series 2-0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_Cricket_World_Cup
So the final picture - of a 'bluestocking' in full male gear and with ciggy - is from a year when England was reeling from being World Champions in something!
B3, B4 (!), B5, B9, B12 all correct.
B10 - you mean it might be answer "e"???!!!
You are right of course, and shamefully you could easily argue, the answer is August 2011. No professional status in the Women's game, no wonder Sarah Taylor woudl welcome a chance of playing among the men - and no wonder it is difficult to hang on to a lot of players ....

B6- '98, had this in the previous one
B10's not E?
B7&8 and A8 no clue
A10- a surprise that they got into double digits

Re: Women Quiz (calm down dear - it's only cricket)
Yep, sorry, somehow overlooked your correct B6 answer.
B10 - no, curiously enough.
B11 - correct - neatly articulated and interesting words too, in view of the brouhaha just lately about the idea of one or two women possibly trying their luck amongst men (errr, in a cricketing sense ...)!
A10 - well, they did!
Leaving only A8, B7&8.
A8 is (as you see from the colour shirt) the previous stumper for England Women.
B7 is interesting insofar as it reflects on the charge that women are not physically up to it, to have a go at the 'men's game'.
B8 is a bit parochially English, perhaps. It does illustrate there is an elite structure in place, though, which seems to be part of what brought the Women's game on in that country, from the backwater it had slid into, many miles behind Oz.

Clearing the rest of these up then, for tidiness if nothing else. ...
A8, B2, B7 and B8.
A8, B2, B7 and B8.
- Spoiler:
A8: Jane Cassar, later known as Jane Smit. > see illustration B2
B2: Kiran Baluch, Pakistan (see two pictures. The action picture is a dismissal off former all-rounder and EW skipper Clare Connor, now at the ECB in charge of England Women, and the development of the Women's game from the centre.)
B7: failed a fitness test.
B8: The "Super 4's". Four elite teams drawn from across the country: as Diamonds, Emeralds, Rubies and Sapphires (presumably the names were chosen partly for colour-distinguishing purposes, though are diamonds actually yellow?). It has to be said this has been fitful as a working competition so far: limited to shorter forms of the game, and - presumably for lack of continuing numbers of unpaid regulars? - it did not run at all in 2009 or 2010!
Even the website looks "a work in progress" - at best.

Bit of a setback for England Women - losing to Kiwi Women in the final warm-up.
Aussie Women looking like juggernauts. Crushing first WI Women, then the hosts.

Here's an argument that matching brawn for brawn is not actually the point.

On the other hand, it's no doubt true that many look for 'thud and blunder' in LO cricket.
