It has been reported recently that he has been feuding with Rod Marsh for a year or so. At the beginning of last summer, he seemed headed for the outer but the death of Phil Hughes changed all that.
He was an excellent batsman at his apogee but a chunk of his purple patch was also against an Indian team whose pie chuckers held up the white flag quite early on the flat pitches of Sydney and Adelaide. They even temporarily revived a struggling Punter's career. There will be many who probably won't rate Clarke as highly as Punter and Steve Waugh among the modern test captains. He has always found it difficult batting higher than his favourite number five spot.
That's no real surprise though Red -and nothing to do with Pups captaincy credentials (or lack of).
Lets be honest, you or me could have captained many of SRW or RTPs teams. They skippered some of the greatest XIs in the history of Australian - nay world - cricket. With the best will in the world, neither of the other two would lead the current XI to the kind of domination they once had ..... the current squad are simply not as good as those retired in the last 10-12 years.
Well agree with that. Interestingly though for all his funky field placings and acknowledgement as a great tactician, he still has lost quite a few series. History may align this with the available personnel but this fact is sometimes lost among the laudatory claims made of Clarke as a skipper. As has been alluded to above, maybe his best achievement was the win against SA on their shores, but no other Aussie captain post-isolation has lost to them away, though Clarke has drawn with them over there.

Don't you think there was some pressure, S?
Aussie selectors have never been noted for sentimental attachments. Sometimes ruthlessly so. (Lawry.)

Yet a lot of people seemingly wanted them to make the sentimental call regarding Haddin.

Well surely they are right. There's no way Clarke would have survived this if he'd decided to dig his heels in. They've given him a chance to bow out gracefully and he's taken it.
Will be interesting if he hits a double hundred at the Oval, though.
Being a dead rubber game i'd expect Warner at least to hit a double ton. He always saves his best for when it doesnt matter.
Re: Michael Clarke is a toxic piece of shit
And a recall for Twatson? You'd bet on him to make a big score as well. Start of a new era....

Is he in the all-time top 10 Aussie batsmen?

Re: Michael Clarke is a toxic piece of shit
I put him on the fringe of the ATG Aus 3rd XI earlier....which would make him borderline top 20 among the batsmen. The following were unarguably better: Bradman, Ponsford, Ponting, G Chappell, I Chappell, McCabe, McCartney, Simpson, Border, S Waugh, Boon, Walters, probably others I didn't call to mind in the two minutes it took to type this, and yet more that could be argued over. Top 10: not in a million years.

The difference between his batting average at home and abroad is far too high- About 20 runs.

People keep harping on about Clarke not being loved by the Australian public. Why is that? Jarrod Kimber just did a piece of it, I just want to hear some fb Aussies thoughts on him

The SA equivalent would be Graeme Smith.

From a distance, he's always seemed quite an affable type - but obviously media stories tell it differently
Re: Michael Clarke is a toxic piece of shit
Prickly, abrasive, 'look at me'. Marginalised rivals, sidelined challengers.

cheers - those few words go much further to explaining why he's not liked than the whole Kimber article
Re: Michael Clarke is a toxic piece of shit
he gives the impression of having as big a sense of entitlement as most liberal politicians. its not necessarily so but thats how he comes acrosslardbucket wrote:So self-absorbed ... that's never liked.Brass Monkey wrote:People keep harping on about Clarke not being loved by the Australian public. why would you pick a player whose fitness is game-by-game, and who isn't really a T20 player?

Even as a young man, he was crap at T20. What an outrageous ego this guy has. Awkwardly, no one seems to be applauding his decision to come out of retirement.
