Australia v England, 2nd ODI, Brisbane, 17 January, 2014
So 1-0 to Aus after a solid effort by the hosts v a sloppy effort from the visitors.
Changes? Shirley Aus will unleash Midge and Patto on the Gabba deck??

They can do what they like. Give the women a game. The result will be the same.

Drop Root and Rankin for a start.

The first four letters of his name seem apposite.

Ballance swaying more to batting than catching, perhaps.

Drop Root, Bresnan, and Rankin. Finn needs to be sent home, as apparently his bowling these days has absolutely gone to the dogs. Why didn't they send him home earlier if he's deteriorated so much? He's just a waste of space on a tour.

Play him as opening batsman, he can't do any worse...
I can't believe it's 5 days until the next match. They could get this including the T20s over in a couple of weeks, why do they feel the need to drag it out?

Was hoping to watch Aus bat first.
Watched the first few painful overs of England batting, then switched off. It is so clear England need KP at the top of the order.
It is lame that KP can get to skip international matches but plays IPL as much as he can. His bosses should tell him that if you want to rest internationals, ok go ahead. We will also not issue you no clearance for IPL so that you can rest better.
But they dare not earn the ire of those who own cricket.

Watto is being rested. So I guess Marsh comes in at 3.

It really does look bad that KP is being allowed to rest but other guys who featured in the tests have to play this ODI series. Resting Pietersen is basically to stop him from throwing a tantrum because he feels he is being over-worked.
What message does it send to other players in English cricket?- Have a big hissy fit and they'll give you time off?

Re: Australia v England, 2nd ODI, Brisbane, 17 January, 2014
We've tried pretending IPL doesn't exist or will go away, and it backfired (not least with Stanford...) A lot of the senior England players aren't in demand for that competition, for obvious reasons, but we have to use common sense to manage it. Scrapping May Tests is a start, it's pointless playing weakened opposition.Anthony_Gonzales wrote:Was hoping to watch Aus bat first.

Even if KP was at the top of the order it would barely change the overall mindset, i.e. I tell you what, we're nice we English, we'll only have 40 overs and you can have 50...

I'm happy that May tests have been scrapped. Now Sri Lanka will have good time to prepare in English conditions, and wont just lie down and allow England to think everything is on track again after we roll them on green seamers.

It's not just KP. Anderson has also been rested, and had Swann not retired he too would have been rested for this ODI series.
Flower has said that Cook and Bell are likely to miss the ODI Series in the West Indies. Squad rotation has taken over.

Ahh, the myth of the green seamer. It's been many a year since we've had one of those.

Yeah, but the ball swings all over the place in May and the teams who tour at that time of year can't handle it, that and playing in single figure temperatures in Durham!

Aus is a far superior opposition than WI - who are just about non existent now.
Plus the WC is on the same pitches in a year. It makes perfect sense from team management viewpoint to see what your best team and combination is.

WI may be crap at Tests but they're still better than us at JAMODIs.

KP is entitled to make any kind of demands he can. But it is upto the administrators to be firm about it. Obviously skipping internationals has nothing to do with "rest" (I mean what kind of heavy workload has KP had anyway?). It has to do with the fact that he can't be bothered about it. That he is far too rich to care for the little extra income that would come from playing a few ODIs. But then he should also not be allowed to play IPL if his excuse is "rest".

I know rankings can be a bit of a joke, but England are at 3, and WI are at 7.

Absolutely no idea how we are at 3. I suppose we win JAMODIs at home in conditions where 230 is a good score.

Nobody has absolutely no idea how cricket rankings work. The very idea of rankings without any structure in sport, just random matches, that idea itself is a bit amusing. Same goes for test cricket ranking too.

We will be a laughing stock in the World Cup if we have Cook, Bell, and Root as the top three.

Test rankings at least give a reasonable idea, though it's questionable whether some countries play enough to judge them on. ODIs outside of major tournaments are like football's international friendlies though, the strength and motivation of opposition can vary dramatically.
