Australia v England, 1st ODI, Melbourne, 12 January, 2014
Hello everyone
As our resident game thread starter is currently incapacitated, I will kick the Australia v England ODI series off.
Would someone please take the role poster skully normally fulfils in this regard? While I'm sure he'll be eager to return, I am unsure as to how long he will be away.
Regards

goodonya Mon. Cheese...I suggest the redoubtable Danny may wish to step up...(he can also give climate readings that explain the vagaries of the pitches)

Wait... England's first warm up game is after the first game of the series?
Piss up. Brewery. Etc.

It will be interesting to see if the crowds for these games are as big as the Big Bash crowds.

So they play the warm up match after the first international? Makes sense.

mad dogs and englishmen agreed to the schedule...apparently what seems to be an unusual schedule was structured around the local availablity of fresh seafood and mung beans in line with the 80+ page dietary requirements document sent by the English ahead of the tour...there is still debate about the location and timing of the jamodi in SA...these matters will be resolved by the timing of the spawning of Coffin Bay oysters

Broad's missing the first two ODI's because he's a little bit tired.

Seriously, is there any point in us playing these games at all? Pay the Australian board what it takes to cover costs and get the clowns home.Basil wrote:Broad's missing the first two ODI's because he's a little bit tired.

I would bring Cook, Bell and Broad home and play some likely lads from The Lions instead

Lions as in the rugby team? They've at least won Down Under in the past year...

I was just suggesting the rugby team might put up more of a fight than their cricketing namesakes... The Aussies wouldn't want to "sledge" some of them, that's for sure!

I liked the way the ECB schedulers used to do it - get the JAMODIs out of the way first, then it's not a total anticlimax after the Ashes are done and dusted. Alas, even the English programmers now seem to prefer the clown cricket AFTER the main event.beamer wrote:Seriously, is there any point in us playing these games at all? And after a series like this, when one team's just mentally shot even if there are a number of fresh faces joining them, it's even more a case of going through the motions.skully wrote:I liked the way the ECB schedulers used to do it - get the JAMODIs out of the way first, then it's not a total anticlimax after the Ashes are done and dusted. The only real interest is the prospect of a "grand whitewash" across all formats. Might stop the advancement of the Giles as saviour cause that will follow from us as much as putting up a fight in this series.

I don't understand Aus "resting" Patto (along with Midge) for the 1st game. I would've thought blasting away at a shellshocked England was the obvious thing to do. We are being instead spearheaded by Qunt M'Kay, who can't even get a start for the Bashing Vile Stars.

Re: Australia v England, 1st ODI, Melbourne, 12 January, 2014
Seem to recall similar sentiments re the upcoming ODIous series after the previous whitewash - as I remember the whitewashees turned the tables on the whitewashers. (Then we lost the Hadchapleepell Challenge. Then for about 10 minutes afterwards we all (but esp Vor) went into a panic and faced the real possibility of NOT winning the imminent 2007 WC. Which we did. Without losing a game. But I digress...)
If the current lot can win the SODIT and then the JAMITT, that would give them serious brag rights over the 06-07 boys.

In a strange way I kind of miss triangular SODITs... always made it a bit more interesting than just playing the same opponent 5 or 7 times.

Only because it gave England a chance of winning a game on the tour.
Re: Australia v England, 1st ODI, Melbourne, 12 January, 2014
Nah - just longer. Instead of the radio-friendly 3-minute cut of a bad disco song you cop the full 11-minute picture disc album version.
When Oz tour in Feb, esp to SA when the tele coverage is pretty reliable, it means I have some sport to watch then - if we stay home, they play the SODIT then and I have the choice of Mickey Mouse cricket on 9 and even Mickey Mouser footy on 7. This year the last Test finished just over a week before the Aus Open tennis starts, and there's only one dud weekend (this one).
