Re: Rugby League 2014
The difference, Growls, is that Hohaia was groggy on the ground after a good first shot from Flowers, who then put his left forearm across Lance's throat before unloading another smashing right at the bridge of the prostate Kiwi's nose. If he had've hit Hohaia with 3 or 4 rights as he stood, you wouldn't have heard a peep from any of us. To use the Tallis example as some sort of "oh, look at this shocker" is a pointless exercise (and I'm a Blue and can't stand Banjo Tallis).
It was a piss-weak, brutal and cowardly shot in the extreme. You don't hit a man when he's down. He may as well have stomped him.

Flowers may get saved from a massive penalty because the victim did not receive an injury that will keep him out of the game for a long time. In leeeeg most of the big suspensions (12-18 months) have occurred when the victim has received an injury like a broken jaw.

Re: Rugby League 2014
Skulls, with the greatest respect, I think you've missed the general thrust of my whole original post by the length of the field.
I've said clearly enough that I agree with most of what you say regarding the incident itself, and that a severe punishment is warranted. I just think your talking of assault charges is wrong, and frankly an over-reaction to a player retaliating to an elbow in the face (for which, are you aware - Lance Hohaia is facing a level B charge?)
I compared that with Keane (deliberate pre-meditated intention to hurt or even cripple an opponent) and Cantona (assaulting a member of the public for yapping, not hitting) simply to put some perspective on the issue.
I know you're a Blue, and don't like Billies - but the Tallis clip wasn't intended as a comparison. It was supposed to be a light-hearted end to an otherwise serious issue, especially my last line regarding tangling with Mrs O. I hoped you may have a smile at that, and I'm sorry you didn't "get it" so to speak.
We agree on so much else that I hope we won't fall out over a scrap on a sports pitch. They're big boys who both give and take the rough stuff, and compared with what we see happening in Iraq and Syria, I hope you'd agree with me that in that context, it's not something to get too vexated over .......

Haha no, that is true. At this point in his career he is yet to behead someone.
And even if he does I'm sure it would just be in the spur of the moment.

Re: Rugby League 2014
Aye, taips - his tally of 392 tries in 408 appearances between 1957-68 is still a club record almost 50 years on, as well as the third highest by any player. Thus he is still held in such high regard by club and fans alike ..... there are plenty of people our age who'll remember him from when they were still in short kecks.

Re: Rugby League 2014
Verdicts are in from the GF incident.
Lance Hohaia handed a one-match ban for flying in with the elbow. Could technically have been given two - but I doubt anyone will pike over the punishment.
I did say I saw Flower deserving, and getting 8-12 games or thereabouts. The panel have opted for a time ban - 6 calendar months.
Since that takes in 2 pre-season trials, the World Club match and the first 10 SL fixtures next season, it works out at 13 games. The club have taken it on the chin, and quite rightly said that they will not appeal. As far as I can tell, St Helens will also consider justice to be done, as he misses over 1/3 of the season.
I do think it's about right. 8 matches would have been a let-off to all intents and purposes. Maybe another month or so (4 more matches) wouldn't have been excessive - but any more would have seemed vindictive, and maybe even good grounds for appeal.
I feel pretty sure that head coach Shaun Wane will have certainly read every player their oracle in words of one syllable, with dire consequences for the next one to lose his cool in such a nasty fashion.

Next time you see him, ask him if the rivalry between Saints and Wigan really is as intense as people say .....

Know him more by sight. Had a longish conversation a few years back but I was more interested in Kevin Skinner in 1956.

Rumours going 'round at the moment that Hayne is going to quit NRL to join the NFL. Apparently* he has withdrawn from the Kangaroos squad.

From a Live press conference ...
"11:05am: Hayne says he hasn't signed or spoken to the Seattle Seahawks, nor anyone else."
-----------------------------------------------
Really?? Seems a massive step without a signed deal.

Thinks he would be a punter or kick returner.
He's no chance of being a kick returner and *yawn* if he's a punter.

Rumour has it that Cherry Evans will go to Parramatta.
I have heard it will be Watmough and Brett Stewart going to Parra and Evans to stay at Manly as Evans refuses to play with the other two.

Lol. I have no love for Hayne. Particularly after the 2009 GF. Absolute lazy fark wit.
Now that we have some money we can recruit real quality players.

I wonder if this will turn out like Marcus Ambrose's move in the V8s? Took his massive ego to the States where he was gonna make it big in NASCAR and achieved SFA.

He's not black enough to be a wide receiver so punt returner may be the only option..
