More on this:
Western Australian backbenchers Luke Simpkins and Don Randall have announced they will move a leadership spill on Tuesday.
Mr Simpkins emailed colleagues on Friday to say he had been inundated by voters with concerns about the direction of the government.

"The last time this outpouring of concern happened was when we were being led to support the Rudd government's ETS [emissions trading scheme] and faced with this erosion of our base support we acted," he said.
"I think that we must bring this to a head and test the support of the leadership of the party room.
"I have therefore submitted to the chief government whip a motion to spill the leadership positions of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party."
The motion threatens to end Tony Abbott's tenure as Prime Minister.
It also means deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop's position will also be up for grabs.

And now the incandescently mediocre Don Randall's stuck his ugly mug over the parapet, like a latter-day Foo....any time that happens you know that whatever's going down will be very brown, very steamy and will smell nothing remotely like White Wings Chocolate Pudding Sauce.

ROFL
The ABC has provided an interesting insight into how the Liebs meeting will handle the spill motion...the procedure seems arcane - almost how you would expect the Masons to operate
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-02-06/the-mechanics-of-a-leadership-spill/6069470
Think Bishop is a real chance - the nats and neos hate turnbull...Bishop has more front than Myers (anyone who could represent employers against people dying of asbestos and mesothelioma and employ delaying tactics so the plaintiffs would peg out and the trial would lapse before being heard is tough) and may come through as the compromise candidate

I see Bishop Minor as Akela or out of the pack after this washes out....she's been chief monkey to the whole parade of organ grinders since 07, I can't see her copping another term of that. Turnbull and her can't stand each other but can work together, how that will go with Jules as Batman and Mal as Robin is unknown, how the ACM flat earth set will swallow a dual Republican ticket is strongly suspected....how many more metaphors can I mangle in one post?

ScoMo has officially ruled himself of running for either Leader or Deputy which suggests he's a lock to be Treasurer.

The Libs should organise a Tones step down ...and ScoMo takeover ...no vote needed
...and no sacrificing anyone who "dares" to pick a side

I just shorted Malcolm at 1.49.
Interestingly, the Libs' odds to win the next election have shortened a fair bit today.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
I can handle a Coalition re-election if it meant that the MM gets his comeuppance.
I actually rate Morriscum highly. Shame he is not running.
Unless Bishop is up to a cunning plan then I don't understand this joint ticket thingmybob with Abbott. Why would she do that?
If Turnbull is the genius he claims to be then I would expect him to be PM next Tuesday. But somehow I doubt it.
I think Abbott might survive this round.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
I'm not sure what Abbott's best move could have been. My instinct tells me that he should have called a spill (possibly next Monday), but getting up in a party room leadership vote won't change the views of the people, who seem to have made up their minds that he's an obnoxious qunt. And IMHO his efforts to look softer and more conciliatory just make him look insipid. I prefer the hard man Tony. Call a spade a farkin shovel and tell people to get farked.
And I don't know if the path he's chosen will solve anything. I don't know if the spill motion will get up or not. I suspect it won't. But the disgruntled backbencher and the media won't leave it at that.
Intriguing times. I know the Sky boys all have woodys.

Simple. She hasn't said she won't stand as Deputy if the spill motion is successful. She'll offer herself as Deputy to both Abbott and Turnbull if the spill motion gets up. She can't lose.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
ScoMo hasn't been really tested yet....so far he has had the gigs where you either clean up a God-almighty mess and make the boss look good, or fail to clean up said mess and in the process make yourself less of a threat to the boss.
His portfolios have been unpopular, which the chest-bangers always love, but to be elected as the party's front man, it helps if the voters can trust you at least nearly as far as they can throw you.....and he's miles from that at this stage. Until, for inst, we know more about the way his Pentecostalism flavors his politics day to day, and until we've heard him and seen him in action up front (eg as Treasurer) we won't touch the barge-pole.

Morrison probably made the smartest play of all in saying "leave me out of this". Bide his time, get a few more runs on the board, and wait for Abbott and Turnbull to do a Krudd-Gillard i.e. fark each others careers.
