The Abbott announcement only says J-Bish will officially not back the spill motion. It doesn't mean that if it still gets up that she won't run.

Anyway, I got 2.80s that the spill motion won't get up and 3.30s that Abbott will be the PM by the end of next week. Feeling pretty good about it - can't lose really.

Now PVO is wondering whether Bishop agreed with Abbott's statement before he made it i.e. Abbott is trying to skewer her.

With friends like J-Bish:

The Foreign Minister and Deputy Liberal Leader has released this statement:

"I agreed with the Prime Minister that due to cabinet solidarity and my position as Deputy there should be support for current leadership in spill motion."

I can't see Bishop as chief monkey for too much longer, whoever the organ-grinder is next Friday. The lack of enthusiasm in JGK's statement is overwhelming. She wouldn't be any more thrilled at the idea of renewing creative hostility with Turnbull.

(Although I'd hate to be the poor sod giving her the news if Whoever decides they can find a better Foreign Minister than her....)

PMSL at Kevin Andrews:

"I believe the team of Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard is the best leadership team for the Liberal Party ...

"The Australian people voted for this team."

Are she and MT so different? I can't recall what it was like when MT was leader but that was 5 years ago.

They were like cat and dog at the Canberra Convention in 1998 (both big wheels in the ARM) and I seem to remember the odd spot-fire when Mal was Opposition Leader. Philosophically there are more ticks than crosses, but maybe the personalities just clash.

Fresh baked poll out of the oven

The 6pm news bulletins reveal some fun factoids for your Friday evening.

A 7 News ReachTEL poll conducted last night shows very different results depending on who a Labor-led Bill Shorten goes up against.

Vs Tony Abbott, two-party-preferred, the result is 55 percent Labor, 45 per cent Coalition.

Vs Julie Bishop, it is 49 Labor, 51 Coalition.

Vs Malcolm Turnbull, it is 45 Labor, 55 Coalition.

Media driven straw polls mean nothing. I think Tony will survive....whether thats a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.

In a tactic typical of a waning leader, Abbott sneakily brings forward the vote to 9 am tomorrow.

Are you surprised? All the pundits were surprised he didn't announce it yesty. And how do you sneakily announce something? Whisper it and hope the word gets around?

BTW I heard last night that Credlin had been sacked but it won't be announced until after the vote because if TA loses she has no job anyway.
