Australia v India, 3rd Test, Melbourne, 26-30 December, 2014
So it'll most likely be Rhino for Koo and someone (Cooper, Burns, Carters??) for Puddle at the G, but I'd also like to see the back of Twatson for someone like Burns, Carters, or Moo and a young keeper for Haddit.

For India, they should drop Rohit (maybe for good?) and Aaron. Ishant bowled appallingly when India really needed him to step up when Johnson came to the crease with the game in the balance in the first innings. But due to a lack of alternatives, I guess he plays at Melbourne. Depending on the extent of Dhawan's injury, he might not play either.
They may explore the idea of playing five bowlers if Bhuvneshwar Kumar is fit again.
Vijay
Dhawan/Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Dhoni+
Ashwin
Bhuvneshwar
Kulkarni
Yadav
Ishant
At least the tail doesn't look so long. Kulkarni can also hold the bat.

I'm beginning to like Australia's pace bowling 'reserves', probably down to the 2nd-3rd level of reserves anyway ...

Australian Cricket would be in serious crisis if James Hopes made his test debut at 36.
Joe Dawes.....some plucky youngster ready to burst onto the scene?

Aye, bowling talent is not the issue. Time to give some young blood batsmen a go. But the idiot NSP won't. Twatson FFS.

Yes, that would be a crisis. The point is more that Hopes would not be a total disgrace in 'Allan Igglesden, David Capel, Phil Newport' style in the exceedingly unlikely event the 18 or so ahead of him were all indisposed and he had to be chosen.
Joe Dawes, what a beauty that was, hey.

Personally I'd love to see Hopes get a run if it is on merit.
And he's as good an candidate as any to replace Puddle as the allrounder.
But fark me - Haddin surely has to go - we can't lose the series now so try the next guy.

Sean Abbott a smokie to be picked in the Aus squad? It would be quite a story....

His bowling is developing faster than his batting.

Caerbannog is an ordinary bowler
Selecting him in a Test team would just add to the tragedy of that ball

Starc would be 12th. I don't think they will drop Haddin or Watson for this game, given that there are two other enforced changes ... but they must be on death row. I think they really want Rogers for the Ashes in England, so I think they will try to keep him in unless there are abject failures in the next match. Two good albeit contrasting fifties in this last game has helped the selectors stick with that decision.
Regarding replacing Haddin ... I'm not sure this will happen in a hurry, because (again) I think they would prefer to send him to England next year, given his experience and results there, and then have him retire. Carters would be a good reserve keeper in that Ashes squad, and for a place on that tour I suspect he has now probably moved ahead of Whiteman, Nevill, Ludeman, Wade, Handscomb, Hartley, Dunk, and Paine; who are probably now ranked in roughly that order. If they choose to replace Haddin for the last two games of this series, then I suspect they will as a short-term measure choose the more experienced man, Wade, although I would prefer them not to do this.
It is Haddin's failures with the bat, rather than with the gloves, that is the issue currently, and I am not sure that any of the others listed will now be a better gloveman, however good Hartley and Paine might have been in that department earlier in their careers. Wade certainly won't.

Joe Burns is in the squad for the Boxing Day test.
........ but somehow Haddin retains his place.
Australia's squad for the third Test: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Steve Smith (capt), Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle.

Has Burns batted at 6 recently?
We seem to have reverted to picking 5 top 3 batsmen in our top 6.

That was my query. He's a number three, bat him there. Don't hide him. If we're going to use Watson it would be better at six in case he has to bowl well.
