Re: Football 2020-21 Season
Well, that one’s still on the cards after they beat the Dutch… but the Swiss toppling France has to be the biggest Euro shock since Greece won the whole thing.beamer wrote:Euro ‘96 all over again? Football comes home, as do Scotland early on, and the unheralded Czechs make the final?
Wide open now, and the big one tomorrow (Sweden v Ukraine, of course…)

England hasn't conceded a goal yet! Hard to lose when you have a defence like that.

Re: Football 2020-21 Season
And defence was supposed to be our weakness, apart from having a World XI of options at right-back.
We still haven’t quite solved the puzzle of what is the right combination up front, but now it’s pretty much NFL-style rolling subs then they all get a go at some stage.
It is wide open, though. I don’t think Spain are that great, they may have scored 10 in 2 games but Slovakia imploded and the Croatia game could have been anything. I’d only put them at just above 50-50 to beat the Swiss. Italy-Belgium winners might be favourites, though the Belgians in particular are being hit with injuries. And then there’s Denmark and the Czechs, who are both on a roll and have a track record of surprise successes at this competition.
We have to take Ukraine seriously, anyway, we’ve seen other big names come unstuck.

Well, yeah, but… we had a similar scenario three years ago, beat Sweden and Croatia to make the World Cup final. We managed one out of two.JGK wrote:Still beams, you have to be a teeny weeny bit excited...
35 years of dashed hopes since Maradona rose like a salmon to “head” the ball over the foot-taller Peter Shilton keeps my expectations at a certain level. I mean, that’s almost twice as long as we waited for the Ashes (and there’s another 20 years before it that I’m not old enough to remember!)

Looks a quality effort by England v Ukraine.
Semi-finals for the first time in Euro since 1996.

England v Italy final at Wembley would be tasty. An England win would give victories over 2 of the 3 Axis nations in Wembley Finals.
A win over Japan might be tricky though.

Guess it’s another 55 years then.
We won’t win in Qatar, anyway. The Aussies have more chance of lifting the trophy in those conditions!

A 1-1 draw with Udinese gives NAPOLI the Serie A title. Their first win in the Scudetto since the 1989/90 season when Maradona was there.
Napoli have been brilliant for most of the season but have struggled since the start of the April. Victor Osimhen & Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have been their stars of 2022/23.

Re: Football 2020-21 Season
Yeah, their big players are likely to be picked off by English or Spanish clubs in the summer but an impressive achievement, they’ve been down to the third tier I believe since Maradona’s day, and blown it a couple of times since they became contenders again.
Less surprising to see a team in sky blue topping the table in England, but it’s a club who nearly went out of existence a quarter of a century ago that’s threatening to gatecrash the Euro party here. Brighton completed a double over Man Utd with an ultra-Fergie-time VAR penalty, and retain outside hopes of reeling them in for a top four spot, and a strong chance of holding off Liverpool and/or Spurs.

I don’t like Liverpool but kudos to their fans who booed during and drowned out playing of God save the King.

Ange Postecoglou joins Spurs as the EPL’s first Aussie manager. Can he cut it south of the border?
