Re: English county season 2008 (V)
Doubt it.
I think England would need to rule out the second incarnation of the Sussex Cymbals (which shouldn't take long to be fair, I'm quite looking forward to it in a Car Crash TV sort of way) and then Foster before even considering turning back to Read.
Probably looking at some time next summer by then, at which point he will be approaching 31, and they'll rule him out in terms of age and look to a younger man.
It's his 30th birthday today BTW. Happy birthday, Ready - shame he's celebrating it from the sidelines with a broken finger and a penultimate delivery defeat!

I don't think he's even on the selectors' radar any more to be honest. The ICL issue just gives them one more excuse not to consider him.
He didn't quite have what it takes as a number 7 batsman at Test level but then again neither does Ambrose on the evidence we've seen so far. The keeper debate/cycle has a lot further to run I suspect but I think they will be looking at younger candidates from now on.

Big_Bad_Bob wrote:England set the tone for the problems they've faced ever since when they dropped Read before the Antigua Test in 2004.
He was dropped for a lack of runs (3 innings - better average than Tres) despite playing in a blossoming side that had won the previous 3 Tests, when his keeping was immaculate.
He had also saved a game with the bat in Sri Lanka a couple of months earlier, and before and after that won England JAMODI games wielding a lusty blade.
Since then, England have spun round and round in circles never threatening to do anything other than disappear up their own arse.
Read was dropped because his batting didn't and was never likely to come up to Stewart's level. Any subsequent keeper has come under the scrutiny of being compared to the high standards of Read's glovework.
In failing to do the latter, inevitably the pressure on the batting also increases and a series of keepers have ultimately imploded.
What England should have done back in 2004 was stick with Read for far longer than they did. It was a winning side, and Read has since proved with his improved performances in County cricket that his batting is not to be sniffed at, and has underlined that with runs in the A Team against various opposition including a full Pakistan side when he made 150*, and followed it up with runs against the same side in the Test arena.
By that time however, the merry go round was well and truly in full flow, and he was quickly jettisoned by a bloody minded Feltch who took exception at being rail roaded into accepting a man he had rejected back into the fold.
His final opportunity came after a single First Class innings in 4 months in a team 3-0 down against the best side in the world, playing under a captain and coach who did not want him.
All this crap about him not having the mental strength to play international cricket is complete bunkum, and purely a reflection on the short term circumstances in which he has found himself in the side on an irregular basis over almost a decade now.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that had they shown the faith in Read that they should have done back in 2004, they would now have a keeper on their hands who was comfortably averaging over 30 with the bat, and who was virtually peerless in international cricket with the gloves.
We would kill for that now.
Instead of that, we're still chasing our arse, currently have as big a problem on our hands as we ever did, and find ourselves up another cul-de-sac with nowhere to go.
Prior FFS.
We're doomed!

Gibberish.
He was dropped because the laundry bill to clean up his soiled kit everytime he walked to the crease was getting to high.

I love how feasting on part-time, mediocre dross is described as 'better attacks'. Oh, you're solely on about the Aussies, who he averaged sweet FA against?
Re: English county season 2008 (V)
Come on. Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir, Danish Kaneria and Mohammad Asif plays Kyle Mills, Chris Martin, Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori. If you pick the latter as better then you're just retarded.

Well. It depends really. I'd take Mills, Martin and Oram over Nazir. Easily. I'd take Gul over any of the NZ boys. Vettori was in form. Kaneria really, really wasn't. So I'd take Vettori.
Asif played one game, bowled 10 or less balls at Read.
He milked the likes of Taufeeq and Butt.
In all he faced about 20 balls from Umar Gul, who got him out twice.
Therefore, it's pretty much an attack of Taufeeq, Butt, Nazir, Kaneria and Mohammad '50' Sami.
If you'd pick that attack over the NZ one, then you're just a little joke of a bloke.

Played one test of that series if I'm not mistaken?
Gul 67 @ 31
Nazir 36 @ 35
Kaneria 220 @ 34
Sami 81 @ 51
Razzak 100 @ 37
Asif - played only the final test 51 @ 23
Against
Mills 39 @ 27
Martin 140 @ 33
Oram 60 @ 31
Vettori 257 @ 34
Southee 5 @ 39
Hmmmm, pretty much of a muchness there really, and if not I would suggest the Kiwi's stats as a bowling unit are better than those of the Pakistani team that took the field bowling dross for the first 3 tests.
However Sami played 3 of the 4 tests.

Gus will come on and apologise for trying to make things look better/worse than they are. The punchy, miserable little scamp.
As I said, Gul and Asif are good bowlers but he only faced about 30 balls of them combined. The fact he battered Taufeeq and Salman Butt also, is something he'll acknowledge.

Re: English county season 2008 (V)
You can flash all the stats you like about which bowlers he faced and how 'great' he has done in the county championship - the matter of fact is that at test level he's looked no more than a number 8 at the very best.
And never have I seen someone begging to be given out lbw, like a little schoolboy than Chris Read!!!

I think the problem is, his batting is no worse than any of the other keepers we have tried (bar Prior, but we need someone who can catch) and his keeping is the best in the country.

England U-19s have done outstandingly well today. 237 all out after Wakely and Hales had given it a good tonk to reach 110 off 18-overs (ish). They'll do well when they grow up and get into the full England side. Lightning starts become mega-collapses.

Wakely's apparently 'getting it back'. He grew 3 inches really quickly over the close season and it affected his balance at the crease.
NZ need 2 off 2 balls with one wicket left. Exciting.

Mixed day for the Nottinghamshire kids; Hales gave it a good biff up top whilst Fletcher took a biffing. 2/38 looks good in theory, but off 3.5 overs? Not quite, methinks.

Re: English county season 2008 (V)
England’s collapsible top order have been the subject of considerable disquiet in recent months, but the Team England camp keep intoning that they all have career averages in the 40s (apart from Pietersen at 50+), thus asserting their right to keep their places. Yet Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Paul Collingwood are all averaging under 40 over the last 12 months (and Michael Vaughan’s 12-month average was under 30 before he fell on his sword). Those healthy career averages are mostly telling lies about how good these players are *today*. And while Bell’s average over the last year is a reasonably impressive 47, when has he scored runs against a good attack on a vaguely helpful pitch? Unanalysed averages in his case probably serve to hide his being a bully on flat wickets or when faced with popgun attacks but pretty much useless when the chips are down.
Re: English county season 2008 (V)
Rikki Clarke resigns as Direbyshoite skipper.

Dominic Cork (to my regret) and Simon Marshall (more surprisingly) have been sacked by Lancashire.

Cork - to let the younger players through.
Didn't see a reason given for granting Marshall his freedom.

Don't know how much Cork has got in him but I should imagine Marshall will get picked up - especially as he can bat a bit.
