Re: English county season 2008 (VI)
If England are going to play an additional 'spinner' in India, it's now far more likely to be Samit Patel than any other candidate outside of the previous Test squad.

Yeah, though as a bowler he's as piss as Blackwell. Actually probably worse.

Somerset 380 ao. Can Yorkshires England employee get past 20? Kin well hope so.
3 bonus points in the bag, 3 more and a draw might be enough to keep us up.
Come on you Kent!

Yeah but in the JAMODI's I can see Patel being more effective what with the whole round arm action. and FWIW I believe him to be a far superior bastmen with bags of potential. Wouldn't surprise me if he was picked ahead of someone extremely unfortunate like Ace, who proved on the last tour he can hold his own in the sub-continent. I can see him being one of KP's picks... probably ahead of Bopara which wouldn't be all that unfair IMO. There's just something about Bopara that makes me think he might not cut it at test level... Seems a confident character but just doesn't strike me as a test class batsmen...

Samit's a very effective OD bowler now, but I agree he's got a long way to go to be a real threat at Test or even First Class level.
Can definitely see them using his all round skills to lengthen the batting and / or give them the extra spin option if he performs well in the shorter games leading into the Test series though.

Fair enough. Not sure we'd do two SLAs again though, it got lamented last time around - there's bound to be the 'different angles argument' hence my thoughts of an OS who can bat at 8.

Samit Patel - 9 FC wickets all season. 2nd spinner for India

Aye - quite agree, not saying I'd necessarily do it, but this is the England selectors we're talking about here.
You can see with the way their feeble minds work why they'd find it an attractive option.
Like Danny, I'd go for Swaaaaaannnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeee myself.

Re: English county season 2008 (VI)
Mark Wagh goes to his ton.
Looks like he probably took Afzaal for 10 in 2 balls to get there.
Patel 92* off 84 balls!
Notts 260/2 and about to go past Slurrey's meagre total.

BTW, I'm not really slating Rashid. I'm just saying that runs at 18, wickets at 32 plays runs at 38, wickets at 25. Granted AUR has had to do the harder yards. Just that the bloke who has done nothing wrong in international cricket, averages 20 with the bat, 27 with the ball, has a superior record this year in FC and List 'A' cricket, with bat and ball this year and his place shouldn't be one that's first up for contention.

yeah, i'm selecting more on promise than stats though - and the fact he offers a bit more of a wicket taking threat because he's not a bog standard spinner. But we've done this before and we both have a different opinion so lets not go there. And as i've said then, i've no problem with swanny being the ODI spinner either

100 off 89 balls for Samit.
11 x 4's, and 4 x 6's.
Top effort that even if the opposition bowling is rather .
Chucktar 0-24 off 6.

Notts added 187 between lunch and tea - Surrey added 59 in the same session yesterday.
They've now added a further 109 runs in an hour since.
