Illness flattens Steyn.
Not a good portent ahead of the series against us.
Steyn flattened by illness
2008-10-22 22:07
Dale Steyn (Gallo)
Christo Buchner
Johannesburg - Dale Steyn, the find of South African cricket last season and also the South African player of the year, is likely to miss the beginning of the new international season.
A mysterious illness has flattened the young fast bowler, who has spent almost the entire past month in bed.
Two days after returning from Dubai, where he was named the International Cricket Council's Test player of the year, Steyn started developing severe headaches.
“It was so bad that I could hardly get out of bed. I also became terribly nauseous. Until now the doctors have not been able to determine exactly what the cause of the headaches is," Steyn said on Wednesday.
“I've lost four kilograms in the past month. I've also had a lumbar puncture to try and find out what's going on.
“I was in hospital for five days in Cape Town, where all sorts of tests were done on me.
Could be ready for Bangladersh
“At least I'm feeling a bit better and I started ‘gymming’ again this past week. But bowling has been totally out of the question. I'm still feeling pretty run down," Steyn admitted.
Steyn says some of the doctors who have examined him suspect that the fact that he played continuously without any break for such a long period may have something to do with his condition.
“I don't think I'll be able to play in the two matches against Kenya, and will possibly be considered again only against Bangladesh," said Steyn.
In the meantime Steyn has moved to Cape Town, but will still play for the Titans. He hopes to be fit to play for them in the Champions League early in December.
Steyn, who dominated Test cricket last season and took the most wickets by far, will be a key player in South Africa's quest to beat the Aussies Down Under.
“That is why I believe it's necessary rather to take things easy for now and not to take a chance against Kenya. I want to be at my best against Australia. Since the series in England I haven't bowled a single ball," said Steyn.

If i am not mistaken the 1st test vs AUS starts on the boxing day. The BAN games don't matter because even Madan Lal can bowl them out.Chandan wrote:PlanetPakistan wrote:well thats NOT good at all! Hope he is fully ready by the Boxing day!

Some SA doctors have pointed to the English smog playing havoc with his sinuses. He was meant to have struggled with sinusitis towards the end of the pommie tour.
