Re: ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2009, South Africa, 1-19 April 2009
Anyways, the first round of the S8 has taken place.
In what I would term an upset, Afghanistan has taken a match off the previously impervious Ireland. (Afg 7/218 off 50 overs, Ire 196 off 47.3). I didn't think the 218 would be nearly enough, given that the bowling has been Afghanistan's weakness to this point. Hamid Hassan took 5/23. White and O'Brien made late order 50s for Ireland, but in vain. Afghanistan will be glad to get some points on the board against a stronger team.
In another surprising result (and a similar scorecard), Scotland beat the Netherlands (Sco 8/216 off 50, Ned 190 off 48.4). Blain took a michelle for Scotland.
Namibia beat UAE (Nam 7/280 off 50, UAE 9/231 off 50).
Canada beat Kenya (Ken 181 off 43.5, Can 3/185 off 34.3). The real damage was done by Kenyan-born Canadian Osinde, funnily enough (4/39 off 9.)
Table reads:
Canada 6
Ireland 6
Kenya 4
Netherlands 4
Scotland 4
UAE 4
Afghanistan 2
Namibia 2
In the 9th place playoff semis, Bermuda beat Oman by 8 wickets, and Uganda beat Denmark by 62 runs.

This coudl turn out to be a tournament where the S8 stage isn't redundant after the first or second matches. Due to those results, every team is still very much alive.

The Afghanis have three games left, and are one win, plus NRR out of the top four.
They play Scotland, Canada and Namibia. Realistically, they'll need to win all of them to get to 8 points to keep themselves alive. Good luck to them, but I think the loss to the UAE in the group stage may wind up being fatal for their aspirations.

Just so I'm clear an that concept, that'd be the same Banindians who are yet to host a full tour by Bangladesh, right?

That's the end of the road for Afghanistan, isn't it?
I noticed that the Bermuda 8-wicket win over Uganda was after chasing down 352. Shame they coudln't have shown something like that attitude earlier in the tournament.

Afghanistan win again, with a one-two against Ireland and Scotland.
They are still doomed as regards WC qualification though.

What the? Namibia beat Kenya by 201 runs. (Nam 305 off 49.5, Ken 104 off 30.0) The three Burgers did most of the work. I did not expect this at all.
Also surprising is UAE's win over Canada. (Can 194 off 49.5, UAE 5/200 off 31.2). Lighting knock by opener Amjad Javed put the Emiratis in a good position. Winning runs were brought up by a six by Nayak
Ireland sailed home versus Netherlands. (Ned 222 off 50, Ire 4/226 off 44.3) Porterfield's 78 set Ireland up. Tendo has left the tournament to play for Essex.
A clatter of wickets sealed victory for Afghanistan over Scotland. (Afg 279 off 50 Sco 237 off 47.1). At the end of the 45th over, Scotland was 6/223 and it was looking like they might have a chance of getting home. The last four wickets fell in nine deliveries. Captain Nowroz Mangal (back from suspension) and Karim Khan were the main runmakers for the victors.
Ireland 10
Canada 8
Kenya 6
Netherlands 6
UAE 6
Namibia 4
Afghanistan 4
Scotland 4
The remaining matches are Scotland v UAE, Afghanistan v Namibia, Canada v Netherlands, Irelands v Kenya.
Technically, only Ireland has sealed a berth at the World Cup. Any of the other teams could qualify, any of the other teams could miss out. Well set up for a tense final round.

"That's the end of the road for Afghanistan, isn't it?"
No, no, they still have a reasonable chance. Basically they need to win their match against Namibia, AND hope that at least two out of Kenya/Netherlands/UAE lose their matches, AND hope they have a good enough NRR. Their NRR is not _too_ bad at present.
For example, if Canada beat Netherlands, Ireland beat Kenya, UAE beat Scotland and Afghanistan beat Namibia (none of which are unlikely outcomes), then the table says::
Ireland 12
Canada 10
UAE 8
Kenya 6
Netherlands 6
Afghanistan 6
Namibia 4
Scotland 4
and it would be up to NRR to determine the fourth qualifier.

Team | Mat | Won | Lost | Tied | N/R | Pts | Net RR | For | Against |
Ireland | 6 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 10 | +0.860 | 1226/245.5 | 1238/300.0 |
Canada | 6 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 8 | +0.855 | 1438/283.0 | 1151/272.2 |
Kenya | 6 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 6 | +0.006 | 1072/262.2 | 1146/280.5 |
Netherlands | 6 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 6 | -0.019 | 1395/289.5 | 1419/293.4 |
U.A.E. | 6 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 6 | -0.813 | 1168/277.5 | 1204/240.0 |
Namibia | 6 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | -0.022 | 1428/300.0 | 1397/292.1 |
Afghanistan | 6 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | -0.316 | 1392/300.0 | 1448/292.1 |
Scotland | 6 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | -0.576 | 1210/300.0 | 1326/287.4 |
Must confess I wan't expecting Afghanistan to get over Scotland.
Canada would need to give the Dutch a bit of a touch up, likewise Ireland over Kenya, to drop those NRRs sufficiently. Afghanistan would need a decent win against Namibia to boost their own.
A better result for Afghanistan if the others all happen would be a narrow Scotland win over the UAE, as both their NRRs are below Afghanistan's.
So a fascinating final round in prospect.
It would have been nice if there'd been a separate day for the overall final instead of haveing all top-8 positional deciders at the same time.
