DJ_Smerk wrote:It's all down to advertising. It seems obvious that Aus and England have more attendance at Tests, because most cricket is advertised on billboards, TV, magazines, even on buses.
How fast are people made aware of matches in India if they don't have a TV?
you're not serious are you? cricket in india is what football is in the uk. wall to wall. blanket. all-encompassing. numero uno. etc etc

So why the lack of crowd then?
Please do explain...
I don't often see footy matches for premiership sides with barely any people in the crowd....

Re: Has generation Y already been lost to T20?
thats true. the majority would prefer spending their money on a single day (preferably d/n) match with a result at the end. its more convenient for working people
easy access on television everywhere is another. most offices switch their telly on to the match as well
holidays usually get a full-house as do matches against major opponents. the eng-windies series recently in england barely got 10,000 people on most days as well. tests against pak or aus in eden gardens can get as many people on one day as a full test in england
the quality of the stadiums and the comfort level. this though thankfully is improving quite a bit
poor pitches in the 70s and 80s killed a lot of interest in test cricket. the 90s were pretty good and this decade has been a mixed bag
in terms of number of people attending test matches in india i would say it would be pretty close to england numbers. maybe not as much as australia, which has the boxing day and new year tests that bump up the numbers
my advice to the bcci would be to improve the stadiums including roofs on all stadiums, get better pitches in all test centres, schedule matches more during the winters when the weather is more conducive for sitting through a full day and provide more amenities at a better price within the stadium. at present you cant carry any food, water or even your mobiles into the stadium. in that scenario you need good quality f&b at a good price

These two-match series in May don't quite follow the usual pattern of Test cricket in England. The weather is usually cold, the opposition often weak or underprepared and they often use less established venues like Chester-le-Street. I don't think anyone really wants Test cricket at that time of year but they have to do it to satisfy Sky TV and the ICC.The One wrote:the eng-windies series recently in england barely got 10,000 people on most days as well.
The major series of the summer is nearly always a sell-out for the first three days at least. This summer's Ashes they could have sold out several times over whatever ridiculous price they charged!

well we dont have a set test season like eng or aus. sometimes tests are played in 45 degrees heat, sometimes interrupted by the southern monsoons. in perfect conditions we do get the grounds full as well

Well there we are. was there any need for giving me the "are you serious line". Football crowds in Britain turn up regardless of weather.

I remember our last win in 2006, there was a damn good crowd yet the test before was poorly attended
From memory the ticketing policy during Australia's last tour was comical. Tickets could only be purchased from some bank and you had to purchase more then one day. I remember thinking that someone in the BCCI was deliberately running a "let's kill Test Cricket" offensive.

Speaking of Gen Y (which we were 3 years ago it seems), one of my young staff members just asked me "Who is Yoda".
I have serious doubts about her ability to survive the next wave of staff cuts.

Yes, it's confirmed - SA have totally lost the plot
South Africa replace Boxing Day Test with T20
"South Africa have replaced their traditional Boxing Day Test with a Twenty20 international for the 2012-13 home season, during which they will host New Zealand and Pakistan. The home summer will begin the week before Christmas, with New Zealand playing three Twenty20s, two Tests and three ODIs through January, after which Pakistan will tour for a full series in February and March."
Oh dear. We really do stand alone.

Danny I really don't know what to say about this. I just had a major rant on the SA board about this. I can't post it here as the language would not be allowed. It is a total frigging disgrace. I honestly cannot remember when I have been so angry.

There is a president's XI match scheduled for the boxing day/new years day gap. It is seriously the worst decision made by any cricketing board in the history of the game.

Taips - I genuinely feel for you. I would go ballistic if CA showed this level of disrespect to the game.

I thought when they suspended the imbecile Majola and put a cricket guy in charge we might see some sense from CSA. It is the prime TV period for educating the public about tests and they pull this shit..

I'm totally astonished. As skully said - sacrilege. I mean, it doesn't even make good business sense does it? The Tests are usually well attended as it's over a holiday period. Now I'm really starting to lose faith in Test cricket's sustainability.
