It's a faux pas, nothing more.

Everything needs to be looked at in context. One piece of context is the black and white minstrel shows of the 19th century that perpetuated the racist stereotype that black people were inferior buffoons.

Some people believe that makes putting black on your face a no-no under any circumstances.

Another piece of context is that there is nothing wrong in and of itself in dressing up in black paint to impersonate someone who is black, just as there is nothing wrong in and of itself in dressing up in white paint to impersonate someone who is white.

I believe everything should be judged at face value without the sins of man's history automatically being attached to them.

Having said that, would I have given this skit the OK if I was the producer? No. Whatever the innocent intentions, it's obvious why many people would take offence.
