Re: More racism coming out of Australia
I have friends in Melbourne. Should be in Oz in a couple of years. Don't think I'll stumble into Horrie though.

ever hopeful wrote: As far as the Irish famine goes though, I don't think any of the serious posts on here are trying to defend the English position, only to explain exactly which English people were responsible and to what extent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're arguing that ALL English people at the time were guilty, then aren't you automatically also condemning a lot of Australians' ancestors who were presumeably still here?
(and if I'm not wrong then correct me anyway; I know you enjoy it)Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're arguing that ALL English people at the time were guilty, then aren't you automatically also condemning a lot of Australians' ancestors who were presumeably still here?

I'm certainly not arguing that. I'm not even putting the blame on the government per se. Bobby Peel had good intentions and pushed through the repeal of the corn laws even though it led to the fall of his government. The reform ended up being too timid to make a difference, but that wasn't Peel's fault. His successor Russell I think was just ineffectual and weighed down by the weakness of his coalition.
But there were enough people in the House of Commons and House of Lords who had intentions bordering on the malicious to negatively impact the situation and make the claim of England starving the Irish sustainable. It didn't help that they appointed Charles Trevelyan to run the aid program.
Trevelyan desrcibed the famine so:
The judgement of God sent the calamity to teach the Irish a lesson, that calamity must not be too much mitigated. …The real evil with which we have to contend is not the physical evil of the Famine, but the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people.'
It's not true that England as a whole kept the Irish down, just as it's not true that the white man or America as a whole kept the black man down. But ask a black man who oppressed him and he'll say "the white man" and ask an Irishman who oppressed him and he'll say "the English".
And I have no doubt that many Australian citizens today are ancestors of Britons who were responsible for exacerbating the famine. It's just a reminder that we have a shared history. When I read about British history before the 20th century I view it as an extension of my own country's past. That may seem like I'm adopting someone else's history because my country doesn't have any, but Australia didn't just appear out of thin air. My country is built on the deeds (both good and bad) of the British Empire - we're all in this boat together.

The Poms have nothing on the Germans. I was in Berlin just after the wall came down and visited the Berlin museum to be confronted (among other treasures by the freakin' Ishtar Gate!

I think maybe people have a need to simplify things and to do this most nations need to blame certain other nations for various events. The English would, for instance, likely say "The Germans were responsible for WW2", but we all know really that many Germans were NOT responsible for it at all and many were themselves victims of the Nazis or actively resisted them. And of course you can even take Hitler right out of the equation and say, "The treaty of Versailles was responsible for WW2" and make a very good case.
The point I'm making is that clear cut cause-event wars or catastrophes are rare in history, but so that we don't always end up waffling like this it is sometimes necessary to make generalisations. So yes, I'll take "The English oppressed the Irish" without getting offended.

Did not see this earlier. Agree with all of it, bar Hass' confusion of descendants with ancestors.
Most of my own ancestry is not English or even British, but I accept that the nation's ancestry is largely British, at least until the start of the 20th century.

Yep - A Current Affair with Tracy Grimbitch at the helm IS a tabloid sketch show.

A show I haven't yet watched and having seen a couple of minutes of that clip, will never watch. What appalling crap.
