Not to mention the things that went walkabout from the Imperial gardens in China, apparently.

Hell, my great grandfather's inheritance has probably paid for JKL's education, or Merlin's 1970s bellbottoms and toupee.
As for the toupee and bellbotts ... not a chance ... Oi'll have you know I still have a full head of real hair whilst my drainpipes and winkle-pickers get an airng every Sunday when I wheel out the Vespa for a spin down Camden market!
So ... hit me with your version of the Indian/English history lessons mate ....
Having been schooled in Bombay (late 60's) when history lessons lauded both the mighty Moguls and the even mightier all conquering though generous British (All hail Robert Clive of India), I reckon that, over the last 3 decades or so, the slant on the Brits influence in India has (ever so slightly !) swung from the glorious protector and benefactor who provided a wealth of industry and enterprise to that of the thieving oppressor who raped, pillaged and committed mass genocide across the entire sub continent.
I recall that both the Mahatma and Nehru, whilst rightly despising British rule and fighting tirelessly for India's independence, never actually derided nor accused the Colonists of raping the women or pillaging the land (all those "stolen" precious stones were actually handed over to the Brits by grateful maharajahs and princes as "payment in recognition of the protection they got" - methodology later adopted by Al Capone) ... but then again, alas and alack, history does have a habit of being re-written every so often when its original appeal wears thin, "facts" are rediscovered and re-tooled, and a new storyline becomes more appropriate to suit the populace, the mood and the time! It's happening worldwide ... but hey, it's only history!
Countless thousands of British graves (marked and unmarked) that lie scattered in now untended plots across the sub continent and the Far East dating from the 1700's to WW2 (my forefathers amongst them) bears enough testament to satisfy my meagre appreciation of those thieves and rapists of a bygone era !
I never was an apologist - nor will I ever be!

Re: More racism coming out of Australia
Here's a radical notion:
Maybe in the past, as now, every nation had good people and bad people. In all countries, the trouble always started when the bad people had too much their own way, or when a crisis threw them opportunities. All countries have aspects in their past which are shameful, but all countries also have good bits in their history. People are often responsible for their own children's actions. However, no one is resposible for anything their ancestors did. Having said that, each of us has a responsibility to ensure that he/she, and future generations too, know something of what happened in his/her own country's past.
In any case, unless your ancestors were famous or rich then it is very unlikely that you'll ever find out what they were really like. My own ancestors, according to parish records, were agricultural labourers. Whilst I like to think of them as honest hard working sons of the soil, for all I know they were village bully boys who went around terrorising old ladies and stealing hay carts to practise hand brake turns on other people's crops.
I'll never know.

Jury's out on that one.
Merlin wrote:So ... hit me with your version of the Indian/English history lessons mate ....
I've read some Indian history but no one (you and meself included) is interested in detailed expositions. So I will confine myself to saying that a short version of the Indian/ English relationship, from my amateur's perspective is:
Indian chippiness, Brit snippiness.
As for historical perspectives on Indian history, I think 'reinterpretation' happens everywhere and is sign that societies want to examine events from their cultural perspectives. And who would blame them (unless of course you have Nazis doing the interpretation). Who would want to read a British history of the world, in India at least?
As for historical analysis in schoolbooks: There's a fair bit of the 'Brits ruled us/ stole from us' themes, but also a real appreciation of Brit contributions.
In 'real life' in India, as the generations that actually lived under Brit rule, or close to it, pass on, and as our societies move on, there will probably be another interpretation.
But a key point is that in our histories and in 'real life', we don't see most individuals Brits in history as evil or malicious (exceptions are Clive and General Dyer). And there's a real appreciation for some civil servants. Till the 70s and 80s people in rural India would use Brit bureaucrats from half a century ago as the gold standard for justice/ administration which, as they would say, the present Indian counterparts never could match.

No. It's not out. He hasn't a full head of hair. None on the top apart from the stuff that comes from the side.
I mean, why lie? Some people are bald, some aren't, some will be, some won't.
Doesn't bother me, but don't see the point in saying otherwise.

And - FACT - Chicken Tikka masala is NOT an original indigenous Indian dish!!JKLever wrote:

It was concocted here in the UK at Veraswamy's (the very first "curry house c. early 1900's - though now an upmarket restaurant) in Regent Street.
