t20 overkill, coming soon to Australia
It seems that next sumer, in addition to the Ashes, CA wants to have seven ODIs and four Twenty20 games against England.
Can't find anything official about it other than a couple of passing mentions in the News Ltd rags over tha past couple of days, but I thought the ICC rules were supposed to limit countries to hosting 3 t20s a year, with no more than 2 in a 'series'. But I can't find anything official about that either...

Personally, I'd prefer to see maybe a best of 3 JAQUNT series with more T20's played. That way I don't miss half the farkin game while still at work.

Can't imagine there will be much interest left once we've retained the Ashes.

I'd prefer a return to a 6-Test Ashes series. The rest is just filler

Good idea, but the short stuff pays the rent.

No, but I might just resurrect the 5th test thread for old time's sake!

Sounds like a good idea Bas, skully and I could post all sorts of stuff in that. Until Jay locks it.

England will still have retained the Ashes by the end of the 3rd test whether it's a 5 or 6 test series anyway

Re: t20 overkill, coming soon to Australia
With any luck the JAMITT games will all be rain affected 5 overs each...I am sure the punters would love forking over the $$$ for at most 10 overs.

A 6th ashes test in Australia would draw in bigger crowds and TV ratings than a 7 match JAMODI series anyway.

The good news is that they really are going to kill the format. Reports of the demise of Test cricket may be exaggerated.

Anyone else think that 16 matches between Australia and England - regardless of format - is just a few too many for one summer? Even in the old days of the tri-series, that number never would have been reached.

It'll be just like that pointless JAMODI series in England last summer, where the two teams were sick of the sight of each other, and the fans no longer cared.

The evidence from last English summer was that 4 is the right name of games to play

Have the teams requested 7 games to finalise their preparations for the world cup that will be starting 3 weeks after the end of the Aussie season?

The reality is that domestic Boards need to fill the coffers, particularly if Test cricket is to continue meaningfully.
The evidence here is that 50 over cricket has lost it's gloss - still well supported but not the must attend/watch event they were.
Therefore I'm OK if they look to expand the whack feck offering. Hanrahan and many like him opined that limited overs games were the thin edge of doom.

Trouble is, the more you have of them, the less people care - and the less people care, the fewer in number attend.
TV is a driver, but it's no good to them if it's played in half empty grounds.

But in England and Australia, test cricket is still extremely popular. Australia doesn't need these 7 JAMODI's at all. Like i said, a 6th Ashes test would probably have made more money than the 7 one day matches.

I get that. It's what happening with 50 stuff. The answer is to limit the supply to a number where the punters still want more.

I promise you the television gods would not be best pleased.
