Re: The UK General Election Thread (II)
Like a runner in the London Marathon Thirsk and Malton has just declared, becoming the 650th and last constituency to declare in the General Election three weeks after all the others. This was due to the death of the UKIP candidate during the campaign and rules state that the poll must be postponed to allow another candidate to be chosen.
This is the 8th time since 1918 a constituency has had its poll postponed for this reason and the second in consecutive elections - South Staffordshire suffered the same occurrence in 2005 much to the chagrin of the then incumbent MP, Sir Patrick Cormack.
Thirsk and Malton is one of the largest constituencies in geographical area (and probably the largest one in England) as it covers most of the North york Moors and is notable for including both a racecourse and the location of BBC-Tv's Last of the Summer Wine. The constituency was reconstituted from a previous constituency that existed until 1983 and returned among others, a former Father of the House of Commons, Sir Robin Turton, for 45 years from 1929 to 1974.
The Conservatives were expected to win the seat and did so comfortably with an almost 53% share of the vote and an almost 30% majority over the Liberal Democrat candidate, although on a turnout of only just over 50% which was much lower than might have been expected had polling taken place three weeks ago given the nature of the seat.
Whilst nothing can be really read into the result the Conservative share of the vote, based on the 2005 notional result, went up slightly by 1%, the LibDem vote went up by 4.5% whilst the Labour share of the vote dropped by 9.8%. This confirms the view that the formation of the coalition was generally popular with the electorate who are still in 'honeymoon' mode with it. The Lib Dems will be pleased that they do not appear to have suffered at all, but, on the contrary, benefitted by their presence in government (an anti-coalition Liberal who stood lost his deposit) whilst Labour appears to have been damaged by its exit from government and has not reaped any reward from being the single major party of opposition (the Lib Dems and Labour have swapped 2nd & 3rd places based on the 2005 notional result).
Of course, as Chou-en-lai supposedly once said, when asked about the consequences of the French Revolution, it's too early to say yet. This is not a particularly receptive area for Labour and there may have been some element of tactical voting. It remains to be seen whether the Labour leadership campaign over the summer improves the credibility of the party or turns it into an even greater laughing-stock than it is already. The sight of Charlie Whelan-inspired Unite lackeys carrying signs stating Balls not Bananas at every David Miliband photo-op is not a particularly fortuitous omen but time will tell.

Re: The UK General Election Thread (II)
QT last night had the twin dickheads sitting side by side ...
Alastair Campbell (unelected leader of NuLabour for 10 years) and Pierce Morgan (a has-been editor of a red-top and more recently Simon Cowell's bow-jobber in chief on shallow TV proggies) ....
Campbell was eerily creepy .."I maintain to this day that Tony and I were right to invade Iraq" ... whilst Morgan was his usual egotistic self ..."I just returned from 10 days in America doing some television work..."
The thought of having the unelected Campbell at the heart UK politics for 10 years is, on reflection, bloody frightening ... powerful yet unaccountable. ... could only happen in the UK !!
Both qunts of the highest order ... nasty, vindictive and viscious if they were crossed.

Last of the Summer Wine is filmed in Holmefirth, it's nowhere near Thirsk and Malton, Goatland is in Thirsk and Malton were ITV's Heartbeat is filmed...
Where did you get your 'facts' from, Allan?
