You give the great unwashed far too much credit, Q. When in England, I asked numerous people how they voted (usually in a pub) and why. "Those stinkin' immigrins terk err jerbs" was the most common answer.

Hehehe .... Tuesday session in an inner city pub. Sitting in the TAB AREA. There is simulated racing on. One 'horse' in an E Race is called Whingeing Pom. Two young Poms at the next table back it. One has a pencil neck and the other possesses no neck at all. Needless to say the E-Nag runs toast and the two Pomgolians are loud and relentless in their complaints. I have chewed my tongue to a stub. Better than having my head compressed.

I'm sure your loved ones have long harboured hopes that you two give up the gaspers.

Q, you in particular. I remember the horror as a 10 year old finding out that my Dad, who had given up for a year or so, was back on the coffin nails. Your boy would rejoice if you abstained. I'm sure you know that.

Still, not for me to lecture. An outcome of my recent pneumonia event was finding out my blood sugar was out of whack (it was exacerbated by the steroids administered with the antibiotics). I went into hospital with pneumonia and came out with type 2 diabetes. Eminently controllable with medication, but I need to adjust a number of my dietary habits as well. Sigh.

Boris the less than Morris Minor worries Pomgolia will again be a colony. This is a good thing. Disarm the farmers. The Romans, Vikings and French introduced a modicum of civility to those grim shore.

My son is 18 and we had a long conversation about his dad's bad habits. He is fully aware that my liver will win the race amongst my assorted organs to kill me. I explained I was too old to adjust my lifestyle and had made my peace with fate a while ago.

Good advice, A. I have given the same by a dietician. I will follow said advice.

However there is one complication, I go back into hospital on the 30th for a full knee reconstruction (I was worried that compromised lungs may delay the op but they are all clear). Until that is right exercise is a no go. Currently I feel like my knee joint is lined with ground basalt.

Skully - good advice from Embee. I know a heap of folk with Type 2 and they are able to manage.

Guess I am with Qmy. Have reached an age I consider to be ridiculous. Leg aside I still have reasonable quality of life. Watching my ancient mother descend into a tiny world where she lacks agency is ghastly. Here for a good time not the long time.

Interestingly, I do eat a lot of veges, usually most nights and up until about 9 months ago was very active. Alas the knee collapsed on me.

Blood tests while in ICU indicated that my blood sugars had been elevated for at least 3 months before I was admitted. They had been fine 12 months earlier.

Maybe the lack of exercise due to the bung knee tipped me into diabetic range. My Mum has fought diabetes for the past 5 years, so maybe it's in my genes.

Anyway, as h says, easily manageable. Now completely off the grog (not that I was hammering it - just a couple of reds at night), which is not a bad thing.

He doesn't get a cent until he's got a degree or a trade and his mother dies/remarries. It took me the best part of five years and a shitload of money to overturn GAEs bequest to him. Since he was old enough to fly unaccompanied he's turned right when I've turned left. I'll leave entitlement to the royal family and our politicians.

I lost 7 kgs while in ICU, that's a good start. ATM pricking myself twice a day to check the sugar levels to allow appropriate medication levels to be gauged.

I'll have enough time to drink dandelion tea when I'm dead. In the meantime I eat well (very little processed) and I exercise. And this conversation proves just how bloody old we're all getting. Like being in the lounge at an OAP village or the tea room on a cruise ship.

Walking (with an l) is the best exercise but you can surely find some other way to get your heart pumping faster for 30-60 mins 3-5 times a week. Forget bread pasta and spuds, continue the veggies, reduce the Merlot intake and you’ll see a weight drop and some improvement in bd BSL and your HbA1C. Of course you’ll be on metformin as well and that will help. All the best.
