I am beyond pissed off about this. I have voted in every general election since 1979; when the result has not gone the way I wanted, I have been disappointed but I have shrugged my shoulders and got on with it. But this is a different order of magnitude. We are going to regret this for decades to come.

Re: UK politics thread
It is surely the end of the UK as we know it as well. With Scotland (and NI) being so strongly "Remain" it's hard to see how another Scottish referendum would result in them staying with England.
On the other hand, I am envious that the British people can make such a grown up decision (albeit possibly a poor one). We can't even vote to get rid of the freaking foreign monarch.

Which is why I have always been against universal suffrage.

Only 70% of eligible voters voted.

Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I just hope that this is the last referendum we ever have. I don't think there is a place for them in a parliamentary democracy.

Exactly. Who is stupid enough to register as a voter and not exercise the privilege.

Which is higher than the turnout in some general elections of recent vintage.

There's nothing grown-up about this decision. Oh yes, and it is almost certainly the death knell for the United Kingdom as we know it.

Some might say a referendum is a purer form of democracy than first past the post.

The trouble with single issue referendums is that people use them as an excuse to kick the political establishment where it hurts, irrespective of what the referendum was called about and that is what I think we have here. Look where 'Leave's' vote was strongest - mainly in industrial (or post-industrial) centres of population which have been hit the hardest in every recession since the 70's.

I reckon Brits will regret this. A real vote about panic about asylum seekers.

Would be funny if the EU now told GB to GFT and imposed a whole lot of annoying trade restrictions on them.
I did read an interesting article about Switzerland and how despite it being outside of the EU, it has agreed to a lot of EU policies in exchange for trade agreements. The rub is that they have no say in the development of those policies and GB will be the same having given up its EU influence. So in many things GB will now have even less sovereignty.

FTSE looks like opening 8% down today (would be the 3rd biggest single day fall ever if that is maintained). Some banks expected to open down 30%.
So suck shit if you were a near-retiree who voted for Brexit.

Could we see the UK go back to the polls before they actually leave Europe?

I was wondering that, but don't the election laws prohibit that, or can an election be held for emergency circumstances?

Surely it is possibly in the event that no party can command a majority on the floor of the House. Time for Her Maj to earn her wage.
