And Abbott knows it. He won't be around to contest the next election. Turnbull will roll him.

Fark that was drawn out.
Anyway, good result. God's Henchman is kept out of the Lodge. Good things might happen for the country and the North Shore of Sydney and the Brisbane suburbs will get nothing.

I could see him trying to hang around but the pills they gave him when he became leader have to wear off sometime and he'll revert to type.

Parliamentary reform, sucking up to the bush and a better than token stab at Aboriginal affairs. There's something to be said for hung parliaments.

Expect Abbott to go all out trying to engineer the fall of the government early. He will not practice a "gentler and kinder" form of politics. He will ramp up the opposition to 11.

Which in turn will backfire badly, and hasten the return of Turnbull to the Libs.

Sorry Hass and I am not underestimating Abbott
But he did not engineer downfall or Rudd or the demise of Labor's majority
That accolade goes to the Murdoch media and the mining giants.

Um, h, the AFL GF doesn't go to extra time. At least not at the first attempt, if it's a draw, then there's a replay.horace wrote:Bradman wrote:Actually from a vindictive point of view this is a really cool outcome. Mind you, it would be funny if Collingwood were to lose a Gand Final by a penalty try...

Interesting to see how long the demanded Parliamentary reforms i.e. behaviour in parliament will last. All looks like it'll become a bit boring with the Indies wielding power over the big boys.

Abbott will probably try to block them. Anyway good to see the economy is safe for a while yet.

Re: The Australian Federal Election 2010 Thread (III)
From the SMH:
But with or without Katter in the mix, minority government is going to be hard yards. The Greens will wedge Labor from the Left, lobbing conscience votes on gay marriage and other uncomfortable things. Tony Abbott will do what he does best, throwing bombs right, left and centre, applying his aggressive simplicity to complex problems. Judging by today's performance, Rob Oakeshott will struggle to stop talking for the next term. How will anyone get a word in?

Aye, It looks like Rob Oakeshott is our new PM and will be making all the decisions.
And PMSL at qmy's economy remark.

And if they'd swung the other way it'd be Bob. Pretty silly comment. They were both going to be beholden.
And the last time I looked most of the Western world was looking with green eyes at our economy.

We'll have to disagree there. I think some lefties need to put their tin-foil hats away when it comes to discussing the influence of the media on this election.
I have no love for Abbott, but he was the man who played hard ball. He opposed the ETS relentlessly and Rudd blinked. Abbott opposed the implementation of the BER and the pink batts scheme and Rudd squibbed. Rudd then proposed the mining tax in an ill-thought out ham-fisted manner. Abbott opposed it absolutely and Labor blinked. The mining lobby simply tapped into the general view held by the public.
Having said all that, Abbott's dogged opposition was only ever going to take him so far. It was almost far enough to fluke his way over the line. Now that he's fallen just short I'm hopeful he will push too hard and fall over into Latham territory.
