New English fc record for the 8th wicket beating Bobby Peel (210) and Lord Hawke's 292 for Yorkshire against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in May 1896 in compiling the then record total of 887. 2 years later his Lordship (who batted 9 and made 166) ended Peel's fc career by sending him off the field after Peel had relieved himself on the Bramall Lane wicket on the opening morning of the CC game against Middlesex after a bibulous night out in Sheffield.

I bet that was a record Wasim and Saqqy thought they'd keep forever.

On and on it goes... and to think, a mere 11 years ago England's number 9 batsman was Alan Mullally.

I think Broad has surpassed Mullally's best score six times over in this innings.

England retrieve the overall Test 8th wicket record they lost to Pakistan in October 1996. First time England have held a Test wicket record since...October 1996!

What's the odds on Broad passing Dizzy's record (201*) for HS by batsman making his maiden fc century in Tests or 'Tip' Foster's 287* for HS for a maiden Test century?

Lordy, who would've thought at 7-102 that England would end up declaring, as they may very well do. Shocked

Another 16 runs and last three wickets will have put on 400. Perhaps England should experiment with reversing the order at Brisbane.

Very slim, at least for the second one.

He should make the most of this innings though. He may may go on to score more Test 100's, but I doubt he'll ever reach 168 again - so good luck, make it a double.

The only thing that might stop him at the moment is Strauss's declaration but he has no reason to declare until tea tomorrow.

Shame, Broad 4 shy of the world record for a number 9.

Still, fantastic innings.

Bad decision that I reckon.

Broad had gone so far forward that the hot spot camera didn't capture the moment the ball went past the bat.

Then the impact on the pad was over 2.5m forward in the crease - meaning the element of doubt was very high.

and 332. Bit of an anti-climax. Dismissal makes me rather suspicious of hawkeye since the ball was rolling not bouncing and I doubt it would have broken the stumps.

Now to see if Trott can get his double.

Gillepsie's record is safe.

It is still incredibe to think that he was dropped following that game. Not only did he make a double hundred in that Test, in the previous game Australia only avoided the follow on because of his efforts in the first innings, and then he saw them home with a tense unbroken 30 partnership with Gilchrist in the second with only Clark and MacGill left in the pavillion.

On top of that he took 8/90 in the series - in a series where generally the Bangladesh batsmen gave the Australian bowlers a bit of stick.

Although to be fair the position of Kamran Akmal's gloves are not a good indication of where the ball is going to end up. Unless the condition is 'as far away as possible from'

Partnership 2nd highest for any Test wicket at Lord's. Only exceeded by Edrich & Compton's 370 against the Saffies in 1947 so perhaps it is fitting that that record should be preserved given the association that pair (who also hold the fc wicket record for Lord's) have with this ground and the place that season has in the history of English cricket.

Great knock, but please lets banish all the bollo talk of Broad at 7 for Brisbane.

Up to Pakistan to make the running now, they'll need whatever runs they get quickly given this deck is flaaaaat when the overhead conditions aren't there.

I think Broad should bat at 8.

I don't agree with switching him and Swann, and Swann's average at 8 has dropped markedly.

Even if Swann makes more runs, Broad will always bat a longer time - they both average around 26, but Broad's s/r is 60, Swann's is 80. Broad tries to play like a batsman and it means the top order player at the other end can carry on playing the same game.

Swann is always more likely to biff a 40 off 30 balls, whereas Broad may make a 40 in 70 balls, so Swann is less likely to be left stranded by his partner as well - which makes him more suited to 9.

The talk of Broad batting at 7 is if England decide to play 5 bowlers with Prior at 6, JKL. Not an unreasonable option in that case, imo.

Onus will be on Swann to get a big 100 now. I agree that Broad has the makings of a Test all-rounder but isn't quite there yet. One exceptional innings does not an all-rounder make. England's advantage is having such a solid lower-order unit in Prior, Broad and Swann. It's just a pity that the top order allows them so many opportunities to show what they are capable of.

Only change I can see at Brisbane is Bell coming in for Morgan at his favoured No.6. position. Trott has cemented the No.3. spot with concrete.

Errr...no. One of the greatest turnarounds in fortune, most certainly, although Prior helped to lay the foundations but Edrich and Compton here in 1947 might have a better claim in terms of aesthetics and Greenidge and Gomes on this ground in 1984 a better one in terms of importance to the result. I still think this will turn into a batting fest if it hasn't already with the consequent likely draw.
