For the purposes of this match I think we qualify as a minnow. Floyd Reifer captained the team. Seriously.
While the mighty Windies have retreated a long way from the greatness of the 80s, a would never be so provocative to rate them a minnow.WIFAN wrote:skully wrote:Wow!!! Congrats to the Bangers. A win against a non-minnow.
Technically you are right, but any team with Reifer and Dowlin in it can safely be called a minnow IMHO. How the WICB/team management thought we could play against anyone with only 4 specialist batsman (only 2 of which can actually bat) I will never know.
I can only pray that we have something approaching a proper team for the 2nd test and restore some pride. It is extremely difficult being a West Indies fan at the moment.........

Well thank you for that. The full strength Windies side is certainly not a minnow, there is far too much talent at our disposal.
But this side truly was terrible, you had to see the batting of Reifer and Dowlin to believe it.

Not their first-choice team perhaps, but with this line-up Bangladesh would have had no excuse for not beating them. They had about 14 Test caps between them before this match!skully wrote:While the mighty Windies have retreated a long way from the greatness of the 80s, a would never be so provocative to rate them a minnow.

A tragedy, WIFAN, to see your side torn to shreds by internal politics.WIFAN wrote:Well thank you for that. The full strength Windies side is certainly not a minnow, there is far too much talent at our disposal.

Whatever tenuous grip Bangladesh have on their Test status would've had to have slipped away from them if they'd lost to an almost-minnow's 4th XI.

A farce at present. The tragedy is watching the West Indies seem hell bent on becoming a minnow in the next ten years. It's becoming really worrying that they will fall apart completely.

I said that at the start of this match, but got the quite sensible response that they will never be kicked out as the other Asian countries support them and need to keep them in for their own benefit. For that reason there's more chance of Afghanistan getting Test status in the next few years than Bangladesh losing it.Dello wrote:Whatever tenuous grip Bangladesh have on their Test status would've had to have slipped away from them if they'd lost to an almost-minnow's 4th XI.
Would have been hard for them to defend themselves on cricketing grounds though if they had lost this, and an excuse for other countries to avoid bothering with series against them or play B/C/Z teams against them.

Aye, a galling turn of events for the fans of one of what was one the greatest teams of all time during the 80s.Shoeshine wrote:skully wrote:A tragedy, WIFAN, to see your side torn to shreds by internal politics.WIFAN wrote:Well thank you for that. On a more positive note for the Bangladeshis than saying they're still crap 'cause it was only the Windian 2nd XI, what about Shakib Al-Hasan? Is there an international team he wouldn't get into at the moment? Sri Lanka and India only, I'd say.

Shakib is a very very canny spinner with a flawless seam position. There is no doubt he would have caused even our senior team trouble, so the fact that he was too good for our 4th XI is not surprising.
Rubel Hossain looked very good as a nippy fast medium bowler with a slingy action. He is certainly the most promising Bangladeshi pacer I have seen.

Anyways, credit where it's due. Congrats to Bangars for their first non-minnow test win and that too overseas. How many sides can claim that? If WICB fielded a club side against them, it's sin't the fault of the visitors is it?
Clearly they are capable of surprising a side on their day even in tests. They did come close to beating Lara's WI in a test at home as also Pakistan away sometime back after all.

Congrats to Bangladesh i guess. Although they're in a bit of a no-win situation that if they win it's because they were facing a Windies D team and if they lose, well, they lost to a Windies D team.
